UFA, Russia (Reuters) - India and Pakistan began accession to a regional security group led by China and Russia on Friday after two days of summits which President Vladimir Putin held up as evidence Moscow is not isolated in the world.The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, meeting in the Russian city of Ufa a day after the BRICS emerging economies held a summit there, said the invitation to the two Asian nations showed a "multi-polar" world was now emerging.Those words will have pleased Putin, who says the United States has an outdated vision of a "uni-polar" world dominated by Washington and wants to show Russia has not been weakened by Western sanctions over its role in the Ukraine crisis."The evolution of the SCO is taking place at a complicated stage in the development of international relations and amidst the emergence of a multi-polar world," the group said in a declaration after the meeting."These processes are accompanied by increasing security challenges and threats, increasing uncertainty and instability in various regions of the world."The SCO, which also includes the Central Asian former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, is widely seen as a platform for Moscow and Beijing to project influence in the region.Until now it has not been a big force and relations between China and Russia have not developed as quickly as Moscow would like, despite agreement on a major gas supply deal last year.But Putin saw the signs of unity in the SCO and the BRICS - Brazil, India, South Africa, China and Russia - which agreed to coordinate efforts to keep their economies stable, launched a development bank and agreed on a currency pool.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the expansion of the SCO should serve a "springboard" for the organization to become one of the most dynamic in the world."The time has come to reach out across the region," Modi said. JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Ash spewing from a volcano on Indonesia's main island of Java sparked chaos for holidaymakers as airports closed and international airlines canceled flights to tourist hotspot Bali, stranding thousands.Bali's Ngurah Rai airport reopened Saturday morning, while two airports on Java island were still closed. Another airport, on Lombok island, reopened late Friday.Mount Raung in East Java province, about 150 kilometers (95 miles) from Bali's international airport, has been rumbling for several weeks. The level of activity increased in the past week and on Friday it blasted ash and debris 3,800 meters (12,460 feet) into the air.Government volcanologist Gede Suantika said the eruption forced authorities to close five airports due to the risks posed by volcanic ash. The Transport Ministry told airlines to avoid routes near the mountain. SHANGHAI (Reuters) - One of the most powerful typhoons to strike eastern China in decades disrupted air, rail and sea transport on Saturday after forcing the evacuation of more than a million people from the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, state media reported.Typhoon Chan-Hom was packing winds of 162 kph (101 mph) as it hit the city of Zhoushan, slowing from an earlier speed of 173 kph (108 mph).It could be the most powerful July typhoon to hit Zhejiang since the Communist Party took power in 1949, the National Meteorological Center said.No casualties have been reported yet, Xinhua said.In Shanghai, the commercial capital, all flights out of Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Airport were canceled because of the typhoon, state broadcaster CCTV said.Authorities in Zhejiang said the province may face 1.95 billion yuan ($314 million) in economic losses, with agriculture the worst affected, sustaining 1.44 billion yuan in losses, Xinhua said.The typhoon brought heavy rain to Shanghai as well as the provinces of Anhui and Fujian, besides Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the weather service said.Apart from the closure of schools and the suspension of flights and trains, more than 51,000 ships had returned to port, Xinhua said, citing local authorities.
