A large explosion at a Louisiana chemical plant Thursday has drawn emergency response, and authorities say more than two dozen people could have been injured in the blast. The explosion took place at Williams Chemical Plant in Ascension Parish, Louisiana State Police said, and a fire after the explosion appeared to be contained in the plant.Twenty-five people sustained unspecified injuries, said Paige Hargrove, executive director of the Louisiana Emergency Response Network. The site of the explosion remains an “active scene,” Lester Kenyon, a public information officer for Ascension Parish, told NBC News. He said the parish’s emergency operations center is in “partial activation” as personnel from local police and fire departments, Homeland Security, and the Ascension Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness are on scene. The explosion occurred at 8:37am local time, Williams said in a media release on Thursday. Emergency responders were notified and shut-down valves were closed after the explosion, isolating the unit, according to the release.“The fire is greatly diminished at this time,” the company said in the release. “Our emergency-response crews are thoroughly trained to respond to these types of incidents and are diligently performing their work with their first priority being the safety and well-being of people in and around the area.”The plant is located in Geismar, La., about 60 miles northwest of New Orleans and 20 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. The area was described by officials as unincorporated and largely industrial.Fire officials in nearby Gonzales, La., told NBC News that its fire chief and district fire chief are on the scene in Geismar. They have not yet heard of any injuries, the Gonzales officials said. The Williams Olefins facility in the town produces about 1.3 billion pounds of ethylene and 90 million pounds of propylene a year, according to the petrochemical company’s website.

Colorado wildfires destroy more than 350 homes, force evacuations

Drought conditions fuel blazes in the U.S.

A monster wildfire in Colorado has reduced 360 homes to cinders, with fire officials facing continued challenges on Thursday as they sought to contain the blazes that forced thousands of people to flee. The escalating damage from what officials dubbed the Black Forest fire makes it one of the most destructive in the state’s history. The flames had chewed through wooded residential areas of Colorado Springs, and had covered about 15,000 acres by late Thursday morning. The number of homes destroyed jumped rapidly from the about 100 that had been consumed late on Wednesday. Among those was the home of Jaenette Coyle, who watched flames devour her home on TV after bolting the area on Wednesday.

Fire crews battled a wind-whipped wildfire on that burned at least 92 homes near Colorado Springs, while another blaze shut one of the state's top tourist attractions and forced the evacuation of more than 900 inmates from a prison.

“I don’t know how to tell you in words what it felt like,” Coyne told the Associated Press. “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever felt in my whole life.”The racing flames raised memories of last year’s Waldo Canyon fire, which swept through the Colorado Springs area and was the most destructive in the state’s history to that point, destroying 346 homes and forcing more than 35,000 to evacuate.A separate blaze threatened a historic bridge as it spread about 100 miles southwest of Denver. The Royal Gorge fire, burning about 15 miles from Canon City, had charred about 3,000 acres and was 20 percent contained Wednesday evening. The fire continued to burn among stands of juniper and pinon trees, and was expected to present a challenge to firefighters on Thursday, the Colorado Office of Emergency Management said.Twenty structures have been destroyed by the fire, authorities said at a press conference on Wednesday night. The fire is burning on both sides of the Royal Gorge Bridge, which stretches more than 950 feet above the Arkansas River, and is surrounded by theme park attractions.Entire neighborhoods have been devoured by the flames that now threaten 2,500 properties, driven by strong winds and dry brush. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.“We do know that many buildings on the property were a catastrophic loss, but an assessment of the actual damage is still unknown,” Peggy Gair, a spokeswoman for the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, told local paper the Canon City Daily Record on Wednesday. “We had an orderly evacuation yesterday afternoon around noon, so we are extremely happy to report that all employees are OK, and all guests are evacuated safely.”The Royal Gorge fire forced the evacuation of 900 prisoners from the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility outside Canon City to other prisons on Tuesday.“We are not 100 percent certain that any portion of that line will hold under extreme fire conditions,” Fire Information Officer Gregg Goodland said of the Royal Gorge fire on Thursday, according to the Canon City Daily Record. “We have knocked a good portion of this fire down with some great firefighting work overnight, and throughout the day yesterday, but we are not going to call any of it contained until firefighters feel more confident about that.”
