Liberman warns Hezbollah next war will end with ‘decisive’ Israeli victory-Defense minister says army's largest exercise in 19 years is crucial for preparedness, sends a message to enemies-By Judah Ari Gross-September 12, 2017, 5:28 pm-TOI

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman issued a stern warning to Hezbollah on Tuesday that a future conflict would “end with a decisive victory for the IDF and the State of Israel.”The minister made his remarks during a visit to observe a large, ongoing IDF exercise simulating a war with the terrorist group and came a day after he made a separate threat aimed at Syria.Visiting the IDF’s “Or Hadagan” exercise Liberman said he was “impressed by the preparedness, determination, and professionalism of the different forces and among the commanders.”The defense minister added that the drill — the military’s largest in nearly 20 years — “is a reminder to anyone who is plotting to harm the security of Israel’s citizens.”While Liberman did not address Hezbollah by name, as the 10-day exercise specifically simulated a war with the terrorist group, the subject of his warning was clear. The defense minister was accompanied on his visit by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, Northern Command chief Maj. Gen. Yoel Strick and Director-General of the Defense Ministry Udi Adam, who served as head of the Northern Command for most of the 2006 Second Lebanon War.The drill, which began last Tuesday and ends on Thursday, simulated a full-scale war with Hezbollah and included tens of thousands of troops, as well as naval ships and aircraft.Liberman said it was a “significant tier in the IDF’s preparations for a conflict in the north, if one becomes necessary.”On Monday night, the defense minister also offered a word of warning to Syria, after the country’s deputy foreign minister threatened that Israel would “pay a heavy price” for its airstrikes in Syria, during a television interview on Sunday.“I strongly suggest to our neighbors from the north not to try and provoke or threaten us because we take these threats seriously,” Liberman said at a ceremony honoring fallen Bedouin soldiers. The defense minister warned the Syrians “not to test us.”“I advise against entering into a confrontation with Israel. It will end badly for them, very badly,” he said.

After alleged Israeli airstrike, Liberman warns Syria: ‘Don’t test us’-As Syrian official threatens that Israel will 'pay heavy price,' defense minister says things will end very badly for Damascus-By Judah Ari Gross-September 11, 2017, 10:24 pm-TOI

In a thinly veiled threat directed at Syria, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that any future provocation against Israel from its northern neighbors would end “very badly” for them.“I strongly suggest to our neighbors from the north not to try and provoke or threaten us because we take these threats seriously,” Liberman said at a ceremony honoring fallen Bedouin soldiers.Liberman was referring specifically to comments made by Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Mekdad, who told a Lebanese television outlet Sunday that Israel would “pay a heavy price” for carrying out airstrikes in Syria. The defense minister told the attendees at the ceremony in the Galilee that Israel “hopes that one day the Middle East will become an area of peace, cooperation and coexistence. But unfortunately, just today, we heard threats from our northern border, and I’m referring to the remarks made by the Syrian deputy foreign minister.”Liberman warned the Syrians “not to test us.”“I advise against entering into a confrontation with Israel. It will end badly for them, very badly,” he said. The defense minister praised the the contributions of Bedouin soldiers, who he said “help daily in preventing terror attacks in Israel.”However, he also recognized the challenges faced by Bedouin soldiers, who face scorn in some of their communities and difficulties within the IDF.“We’re aware of this and we are working to create an understanding [about] the unity of our destiny in order to pave paths for life of cooperation and mutual respect,” Liberman said.“Of course, this means an openness, which is still needed in Israeli society, to accept the minority and those who are different, with the understanding that we’re all one human tapestry. All of us,” he added.

Netanyahu: Either change Iran deal or cancel it-SEP 12,17-TOI

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Israel wants the Iranian nuclear deal to be amended or canceled altogether, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says.Delivering statements to the press next to Argentine President Mauricio Macri, Netanyahu rejected recent reports claiming that Israel and Saudi Arabia are no longer interested in scrapping the landmark deal, which was reached between Iran and six world powers in 2015.“There have been stories about Israel’s purported position on the nuclear deal with Iran. Let me take this opportunity to clarify. I’ll be straightforward: This is a bad deal. Either fix it, or cancel it. This is Israel’s position.”His statement is significant because the Iran deal is up for review in October in the United States, where President Trump has hinted at the possibility that his country could pull out of it.Netanyahu also condemns Iran’s involvement in global terrorism, saying that the regime and its proxies continue to operate even in Latin America.Addressing reporters at the Casa Rosada presidential compound, Netanyahu says there is no doubt that Iran was behind the two major terror attacks that struck Jewish and Israeli sites in Buenos Aires in the early 1990s. He thanks Macri for his commitment to find out the truth about the attacks and to bring the perpetrators to justice.“Iran’s terror has not stopped since then. They have a terror machine that encompasses the entire world, operating terror cells in many continents, including in Latin America,” Netanyahu says, speaking in English.“In the case of Iran, it’s not only merely terror but the quest for nuclear weapons that concerns us and should concern the entire international community. We understand the danger of a rogue nation having atomic bombs.”— Raphael Ahren.

Israel-Diaspora ties are in peril-The status quo is not tenable: When will the Jewish state allow non-ultra-Orthodox Jews to pray as they choose?-By Julie Schonfeld and Steven C. Wernick-September 12, 2017, 1:10 pm-TOI

For more than two decades, the Conservative and Masorti movements, along with our partners the Jewish Agency, the Jewish Federations of North America, the Reform movement and Women of the Wall, have worked tirelessly together to find a way to include all Jews, no matter their denomination, in prayer at the Western Wall. After countless meetings, protests and arrests, our struggle for equality hit a breakthrough with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet’s agreement in January 2016 to create an egalitarian prayer space at the Kotel.Seventeen months later, however, the prime minister withdrew from the agreed-upon plan — a plan that he himself had negotiated. Adding to the disappointment of Jews across the globe, pending legislation in the Knesset would place the question of “who is a Jew” (in Israel, anyway) under the official authority of the Israeli government’s ultra-Orthodox rabbinic establishment, the Rabbanut. These decisions threaten to tear apart Diaspora Jewry’s extraordinary relationship with the State of Israel, a relationship in which the Diaspora traditionally has put Israel’s security ahead of its own parochial issues. With each passing day, the Israeli government and the religious authorities continue to drive a wedge between Diaspora Jews and our homeland. We can no longer let the status quo stand. Last week nearly 600 Conservative rabbis and congregational presidents representing more than 400 institutions signed a letter to the prime minister expressing our “dismay, anger and sense of betrayal” concerning both these matters. The Israeli government’s and chief rabbinate’s resistance to Jewish pluralism has left those of us in the Diaspora feeling alienated by the government of our historic homeland. As proud Zionists, we are horrified and saddened that the State of Israel stands alone as the only democratic nation that does not guarantee all Jews the right to pray in the public square as they choose.Diaspora Jewry set the Zionist movement in motion with the dream of “lihiyot am chofshee b’artzeynu — to be a free people in our Land.” Along with the decision to renege from the Kotel agreement, political legislation questioning the Jewish characteristics of non-ultra-Orthodox Jews is creating an anger among Diaspora Jewry toward Israel that is unprecedented in the Jewish state’s history. As leaders of Conservative Judaism, we see this as one of the most pressing issues facing the future of the Jewish community.Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and secular Jews alike deserve the same religious rights under Israeli law. With each passing day, the Israeli government and the religious authorities continue to drive a wedge between Diaspora Jews and our homeland. The conversions that we officiate, as well as those overseen by thousands of our colleagues, are not deemed legitimate in the eyes of the Israeli government. In July, the Rabbanut released a list of 160 Conservative, Reform and even Orthodox rabbis whose certifications attesting to immigrants’ Jewish identities were rejected the previous year. Immigrants need those certifications to be married in Israel.Just last week, the Sephardi chief rabbi of Jerusalem and a former chief rabbi of Israel, Shlomo Amar, said that Reform Jews deny Judaism “more than Holocaust deniers.” This insult to the level of one’s faith and Jewish identification does nothing but divide a community that is dependent on unity. We ask world Jewry to stand united for religious pluralism. Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and secular Jews alike deserve the same religious rights under Israeli law. If Israel will not offer those protections, where does that leave Diaspora Jewry’s relationship with our homeland? —Rabbi Julie Schonfeld is CEO of the Rabbinical Assembly. Rabbi Steven Wernick is CEO of United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism.

Israeli-designed breast pump promises to suckle where others just suck-Husband and wife team launch crowdfunding campaign for Anabella, which aims to solve problems moms face when pumping breast milk-By TOI staff-September 12, 2017, 3:45 pm-TOI

Mothers who have just given birth and are breastfeeding know how hard it is to be available 24/7 to meet the demands of their babies. Many make use of breast pumps to draw out and store milk so someone else can bottle feed the baby, giving moms time to resume their careers or even just get some off time.Breast pumps become even more essential when babies are born prematurely and may lack the strength to suckle properly. In those situations, pumped and bottled milk become a matter of health. However, pumping milk is not that much fun: the machines can be loud, feel uncomfortable at the touch and often fail to extract all the available milk, because, well, it is a machine, and not a baby.Enter Masha Waldberg, her husband Senia Waldberg and engineer Ron Edelman. The three Israeli partners make up Anabella — a company developing a new breast pump which aims to solve these problems by artificially replicating the suckling motion of a human baby.Masha Waldberg, a test-prep teacher from Tel Aviv, tells the story behind the birth of the Anabella — named after her and Senia’s first daughter – on the company’s Indiegogo page.“The machine was loud and useless. Ania, (short for Anabella) has just finished eating and almost no milk came out. I knew I had more milk left inside, because when I tried to do it with my fingers it came out,” wrote Masha Waldberg, who says she had purchased one of the most expensive, top rated breast pumps on the market.Waldberg spent hours on forums for mothers — both Israeli and international — looking for an alternative. She also complained to her husband, an internet marketer. Seeing an opportunity, he commissioned Edelman to develop a prototype, and made him an equal partner in the project, with an initial investment of around $10,000.Edelman’s prototype is innovative for one simple reason: it seeks to imitate the grip, strength and feel of the actual act of suckling — down to the simulation of the baby’s tongue motion. It seeks to make the breast pump experience feel more natural while also extracting more milk than breast pumps currently on the market. The crowdfunding campaign has currently raised more than $30,000.Men often don’t see the need for the product, but women understand immediately, said Waldberg in a phone interview.-Understanding the pain-“Women understand the pain. Men don’t understand the pain unless their wife tells them,” he said.As Edelman worked to develop a prototype, Masha Waldberg conducted tests personally.“Everything goes through her, she’s a perfectionist,” said Senia Waldberg. There have been previous attempts to develop improved breast pumps, including one along the same lines as the Anabella, but none has reached a successful prototype, according to Senia Waldberg. The team wants to have functioning test models ready within five to six months, to allow for important safety tests and market demonstrations, as well as approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.Ariella Dubrowin, who owns and runs Hanaka Tova, a Jerusalem store and website offering a range of maternity products, including a variety of breast pumps agreed that current breast pumps have design issues.“The classic incorrect breast-feeding latch is when a baby only puts the nipple in its mouth,” explained Dubrowin. “The correct latch for a pump is exactly that.”The project has attracted significant amounts of feedback online, in response to the Indiegogo page and two videos posted to YouTube. Senia Waldberg says the Anabella team has received “thousands” of comments and emails — almost exclusively from women. Some wrote to thank the project for working to develop a product they sorely needed, others expressing concern, including worries it might contain latex, which Waldberg says will not be the case.Dubrowin, whose store carries a line of flanges designed specifically to make up for the limits of breast pumps currently on the market, said milk supply issues cannot be solved by design alone.“My experience is that it is very challenging for women to maintain their milk supply when they are not with their baby,” said Dubrowin, who is not a lactation consultant, but has by her own account advised “hundreds, if not thousands” of women on lactation products.“The body is not going to react to anything the way it reacts to a baby.”While the Anabella team is currently working with an eye to the US and Israeli markets, their long-term goals are more ambitious.“We’ve had 10 people from Singapore asking to be the sole retailer in Singapore and Malaysia,” said Senia Waldberg.“We are going to try to distribute around the world,” he said.

Iraqi parliament rejects ‘unconstitutional’ Kurdish referendum-In Kirkuk, Iraqi Kurdish leader defends independence vote on September 25, says it's 'entirely legal'-By Balint Szlanko and MUHANAD AL-SALEH    September 12, 2017, 7:34 pm

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — The leader of Iraq’s Kurdish region defended an independence referendum planned for later this month during a visit Tuesday to the oil-rich Kirkuk province, the epicenter of a long-running dispute with the central government.Iraq’s parliament meanwhile rejected the referendum in a non-binding resolution, calling it “unconstitutional” and a threat to the country’s unity.Iraq’s Kurds plan to hold the referendum on September 25 in three governorates that make up their self-ruled region as well as disputed areas that are controlled by Kurdish forces but claimed by Baghdad, including the oil-rich province of Kirkuk.Masoud Barzani, the president of Iraq’s Kurdish region, insisted that holding the referendum in Kirkuk is “entirely legal.”“Kirkuk will remain as safe and secure as it is now, kept safe by the peshmerga,” Barzani said, referring to the Kurdish forces that control the city. “We will not compromise Kirkuk’s identity. We would rather give up our own rights than to compromise the rights of the ethnic minorities that live here.”Kirkuk is home to Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen and Christians. Kurdish forces took control of the province and other disputed areas in the summer of 2014, when the Islamic State group swept across northern and central Iraq and the Iraqi armed forces crumbled.Iraqi and Kurdish forces have driven IS from most of the country over the past two years, but now appear to be girding for a new conflict over the spoils. The parliament resolution states that the referendum is a “threat to Iraq’s integrity, which is guaranteed by the constitution… in addition to the civil peace and the regional security.” It called on the central government to “shoulder its responsibility to protect the unity of Iraq and to take all necessary measures to preserve that unity.”All Kurdish lawmakers boycotted Tuesday’s session, while Arab lawmakers voted in favor, said lawmaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, who attended the session. A breakdown for the vote was not immediately available.Turkey and Iran, concerned about separatist leanings among their own Kurdish populations, are also opposed to the referendum, and the U.N. mission to Iraq has said it will not be “engaged in any way or form” in the vote.In Kirkuk, Barzani addressed growing fears that the independence vote could lead to violence between forces aligned with Baghdad and those loyal to the Kurdish region.“We have no intention to start a fight,” he said. “But we have the right to defend ourselves. Those who launch a war have to expect a response.”

Turkey signs deal to buy Russian S-400 air defense systems-Facing NATO opposition to purchase, Erdogan says defense decisions are a matter of national sovereignty-By Fulya Ozerkan-September 12, 2017, 3:10 pm-TOI

ISTANBUL (AFP) — Turkey has signed a deal with Russia to buy S-400 missile defense systems in its first major weapons purchase from Moscow, Turkish newspapers Tuesday quoted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying. The accord for the surface-to-air missile defense batteries is also Ankara’s most significant deal with a non-NATO supplier.“Signatures have been made for the purchase of S-400s from Russia. A deposit has also been paid as far as I know,” Erdogan said in comments published in the Hurriyet daily and other newspapers.“(Russian President Vladimir Putin) and myself are determined on this issue,” he told journalists. The purchase of the missile systems from a non-NATO supplier will raise concerns in the West over their technical compatibility with the alliance’s equipment. The Pentagon has already sounded the alarm, saying bluntly that “generally it’s a good idea” for NATO allies to buy inter-operable equipment.Erdogan said Turkey was free to make military acquisitions based on its defense needs.“Nobody has the right to discuss the Turkish republic’s independence principles or independent decisions about its defense industry,” he said in the comments published Tuesday.“We make the decisions about our own independence ourselves, we are obliged to take safety and security measures in order to defend our country.”The Turkish leader said the process would continue with a transfer of Russian credit to Turkey.-‘Strategic interests’-Moscow also confirmed the accord, with Vladimir Kozhin, Putin’s adviser for military and technical cooperation, saying: “The contract has been signed and is being prepared for implementation.”He said that the S-400 was one of the most complex systems, made up of a whole range of technical materials.“I can only guarantee that all decisions taken on this contract strictly comply with our strategic interests,” he was quoted as saying by Russian state-owned TASS news agency.“For this reason we fully understand the reactions of several Western countries which are trying to put pressure on Turkey.”Russia’s relations with NATO have been in crisis over its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and for backing pro-Moscow separatists in eastern Ukraine.Turkey, a NATO member since 1952, has currently troubled ties with the United States over a number of issues including Washington’s support of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia, which Ankara considers a terror group. The Turkish-Russian contract is a sign of better relations between Ankara and Moscow since a reconciliation deal was signed last year following the 2015 shooting down by the Turkish military of a Russian plane over the Syrian border.Moscow has accepted Ankara’s expressions of regret over the incident and the two countries have revived the relationship since then.Ankara was also gladdened by Moscow’s response to the July 15, 2016, failed coup in Turkey.Putin was one of the first foreign leaders to phone Erdogan offering support and sharing none of the scruples of EU leaders about the ensuing crackdown.
