MH370: France to conduct searches till Monday-Aug 13, 2015 12:38 IST-firstpost.com

Saint-Denis De La Reunion: France will conduct air and sea searches off its Indian Ocean territory of Reunion island until the start of next week for debris from missing flight MH370, the island's top official said on Wednesday.A wing part was found on July 29 on the French territory and confirmed by the Malaysian prime minister to be part of the Boeing 777 which went missing on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board."Coordinated searches will continue until the beginning of next week," the island's top authority said in a statement adding that searches so far had yielded "no significant elements."He said the searches would be shifted to the periphery of the initial area scoured, especially to the south.Saint-Andre, the town of 50,000 where the wing part washed up, has had a surreal fortnight as the world's media has suddenly descended in droves.Since Monday, there have been a total of 45 and a half hours of land searches and 15 hours of maritime and air searches. The search was launched on August 7 and had to be suspended due to bad weather before resumed. The Maldives has joined a regional search for wreckage from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight following reports that islanders in the Indian had spotted unidentified debris.AFP

Flight MH370 Update: Sonar Finds More Debris? Australian Authorities Say Items Are Not From Missing Malaysia Airlines Plane-By Eben Blake @ebenblake on August 13 2015 12:16 PM EDT-international business times

A French military transport plane taxis at the airport in Saint-Denis along the coast near Saint-Andre on the French Indian Ocean island of Réunion after searching for wreckage from Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, Aug. 7, 2015. Australian officials dismissed claims that a sonar search turned up more debris from the missing plane. Reports that sonar images of two box-like shapes on the floor of the Indian Ocean were from the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 were rejected Thursday by Australian authorities. Objects purportedly discovered by the sonar search, which began after debris from the aircraft was discovered last month on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, were speculated to have come from the wreck of the Boeing 777. A wing part found July 29 on Réunion that was confirmed by aviation experts to have come from the missing plane sparked a new search for debris as officials looked for clues to determine what caused the crash. The box-like objects were "category 3" sonar finds by a search and recovery ship that were most likely aircraft debris, Malaysia media reports claimed. "These are old images, discounted months ago," said a spokesman for Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss, according to the Australian Associated Press (AAP). "In fact, they are the least likely to be aircraft debris."Flight MH370 disappeared March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, sparking an international search. The Réunion debris was the first confirmed piece of MH370 wreckage. More than 400 seabed features have been classified as category 3, which designates sonar objects that are unique from their surroundings, but have low probability of helping the search for the plane, according to AAP.France plans to end its search for more MH370 debris off Réunion next week as the air and sea investigation shifts beyond the initial area surrounding the island, which officials hope will provide clues to the flight's disappearance." Coordinated searches will continue until the beginning of next week. The searches so far had yielded no significant element," said an official on Réunion, reported the Sun Daily.

MH17: 'Russian missile parts' at Ukraine crash site-11 August 2015-yahoonews

Fragments of a suspected Russian missile system have been found at the Flight MH17 crash site in Ukraine, investigators in the Netherlands say. They say the parts, possibly from a Buk surface-to-air system, are "of particular interest" and could help show who was behind the crash. But they say they have not proved their "causal connection" with the crash.MH17 crashed on land held by Russian-backed rebels in July 2014, killing all 298 on board. There were 283 passengers, including 80 children, and 15 crew members on the Malaysian Airlines airliner.About two-thirds of those who died were Dutch nationals, with dozens of Malaysians and Australians among the rest.Ukraine and many Western countries have accused pro-Russian rebels of shooting down the plane, saying they could have used a Buk missile system supplied by Russia.Russia and the rebels deny any responsibility and say the Ukrainian military was to blame. How a missile could have brought down MH17MH17: What we knowThe Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said in a joint statement with the Dutch Safety Board that the parts had been "secured during a previous recovery mission in eastern Ukraine"."The parts are of particular interest to the criminal investigation as they can possibly provide more information about who was involved in the crash of MH17. For that reason the JIT further investigates the origin of these parts," the statement said.Fred Westerbeke, a spokesman for the Dutch Prosecutor's Office, said that seven fragments had been found which were definitely not part of the aircraft, and further investigations had shown that they were probably from a missile system."We are going to need more investigation to really find out what exactly this is and if it is part of a possible system that took down MH17," he added."If we can establish that, then we can say that it is a breakthrough."Analysis: By Jonathan Marcus, BBC defence and diplomatic correspondent-The Dutch safety board is characteristically cautious. For now it is insisting that no causal connection can be established between the discovered parts and the crash. The aircraft is widely believed to have been downed by a surface-to-air missile. Indeed the investigators' preliminary report - released last September - noted that the damage to the aircraft's fuselage and cockpit indicated impacts from a large number of high-energy objects from outside the aircraft; consistent with an engagement by a Buk-type missile. The crucial question remains who fired the weapon - Russian-backed separatists or even the Russian military itself? The Ukrainians also operate a variant of the Buk system. The missile parts could be a help here but satellite intelligence may provide more of the picture. Independent investigators have already established a video trail which appears to place a Buk launcher in the crash area on the day in question.Media caption Richard Westcott looks at the Buk missile system thought to have caused the Malaysia Airlines crash. The investigators would now enlist the help of weapons experts and forensic specialists to examine the parts, the statement added. The JIT comprises representatives of the Netherlands, Ukraine, Belgium, Malaysia and Australia. They are meeting in The Hague to discuss a draft report on the causes of the crash, the final version of which is expected to be published by the Dutch Safety Board in October. The statement comes two weeks after Russia vetoed a draft resolution to set up an international tribunal into the disaster, triggering widespread outrage.Moscow described the Malaysian initiative as "premature" and "counterproductive".The Boeing 777 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was brought down on 17 July last year in Donetsk region.

China explosions: Chemical specialists sent to Tianjin-bbcnews-aug 13,15

China has sent a team of military chemical experts to the northern city of Tianjin, after explosions left at least 50 dead, state media report. The blasts, late on Wednesday night, ripped through an industrial port area, destroying buildings, shipping containers and thousands of new cars.It is not known what caused the blasts, nor whether chemicals have leaked.More than 3,500 residents are spending the night in temporary shelters. Hundreds are injured, 71 critically.State news agency Xinhua reports that rescue workers are "racing against the clock to save the injured and contain fires", 24 hours after the massive blasts at a warehouse in the Binhai New Area. Many of the wounded had glass or shrapnel cuts, skull injuries or fractures, Wang Siaojie of Teda Hospital said.More than 200 experts in chemical materials from the Chinese army have arrived in Tianjin. Their first task was to test the air for toxic gases, Xinhua said.Rescue teams were ordered to wear protective clothing, it added. The warehouse that exploded is owned by a company called Ruihai Logistics, which handles toxic chemicals including sodium cyanide and toluene diisocyanate, according to reports. The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, reports that rescuers "are trying to remove all the 700 tons of sodium cyanide" stored at the site. Hydrogen peroxide had been prepared to detoxify the chemical, the paper says. The Tianjin Port Group Company said dozens of its employees were unaccounted for, according to Xinhua.Firefighters were already at the scene when the explosions took place. They had been called to reports of a container fire, state media said. At least 17 firefighters are among the dead. The two successive explosions, at 23:30 local time on Wednesday (15:30 GMT), caused a fireball visible from space and a blast wind that broke windows several kilometres away.A large area of the port was devastated. Shipping containers were left buckled, bent and toppled on to each other like toy bricks.Row upon row of new cars were reduced to blackened husks.Almost 10,000 vehicles were ruined, according to Chinese media, with Renaults and Volkswagens the worst affected. What we know about explosions: Much of what happened is unclear, but here is what we do knowTianjin in profile: More about Tianjin, one of the busiest ports in the world-'Seismic scale' of blasts: The explosions were so large they registered on seismometers-Blast 'like end of the world': Residents' stories-Nasa has released this image from its Terra satellite showing a dark plume of smoke drifting over the Bohai Sea, east of Tianjin (at left of picture)The head of Tianjin's environmental protection bureau, Wen Wurui, said pollution levels were being monitored."It would be harmful if you breathe in [this toxic air] for a long time," he said."But at present, it has not exceeded [the standard] too much based on our monitoring."Water discharge points to the sea had been closed, he said.A man who was working as a security guard in a nearby factory told the BBC that he saw there was a fire, but did not expect explosions."Suddenly I heard a bang," he said. "I lay down immediately, but I still got injured."My security booth was destroyed completely."Another injured man said after the explosion his mind went blank."My first reaction was to run," he said. "I heard another burst. I was running away. I got blood all over my body."The blast ripped apart a nearby dormitory for migrant workers, who were forced to flee the collapsing building."I rolled off the bed after the first shockwave hit, so I scrambled to run for my life," said resident Dan Agio."When I reached downstairs, the second blast happened. It's as if the sky collapsed. In a blink of an eye, the roof fell."The editor of the BBC's Chinese Service, Raymond Li, points out that 24 hours after the explosions, the cause still is not known.Just a few days ago, city officials visited the industrial site to discuss safety standards, he says.It is also becoming clear that the hazardous chemicals were stored closer to residential areas than they are legally allowed to be, he says.Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has promised "open and transparent information disclosure" on the investigation. The People's Daily reported that officials had said the cause of the explosion would be figured out once the fire at the scene had been completely extinguished.
