NEW YORK (Reuters) - Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard was released on Friday after 30 years in an American prison but he will stay in the United States under strict parole conditions in a case that strained relations between the two allies for decades.Pollard, a former civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted in 1987 of passing classified information to Israel.He was released from a federal prison in North Carolina and headed to New York, where he was set up for electronic monitoring as required under his parole, according to spokesmen for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and U.S. Marshals Service."After 30 years in prison, he wants to get his life back on track," said Eliot Lauer, one of Pollard's attorneys.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, which has long pushed for Pollard to be freed, welcomed his release. But Netanyahu has urged Israelis not to celebrate too much in case that damages efforts to persuade the U.S. government to let Pollard leave for Israel sooner.Pollard, who was granted Israeli citizenship while in prison, has said he wants to emigrate to Israel, where his wife lives and where he can expect to receive substantial Israeli government back pay."I'm sorry, I can't comment on anything today," the 61-year-old Pollard told a swarm of reporters as he left the courthouse in Manhattan with his wife, Esther, after being fitted for the monitoring.Pollard's lawyers filed a petition with the court seeking to rescind the parole conditions, calling them "onerous and oppressive."He will be required to wear an electronic bracelet so his movements can be monitored at all times.His computers and those of his employer will be subjected to unfettered monitoring, something his lawyers said could prevent Pollard from starting a job in research at an unnamed New York City investment firm.ON PAROLE-As part of his parole, Pollard must remain in the United States for five years, although his lawyers have asked President Barack Obama to commute his sentence, allowing him to go to Israel immediately.U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes said Obama "has no plans to alter the forms of his parole" to allow him to leave the United States.Successive U.S. administrations had resisted Israeli calls to show the unrepentant Pollard clemency, though Washington did, at times, mull an early release as part of its efforts to revive talks on Palestinian statehood in Israel-occupied territories."The people of Israel welcome the release of Jonathan Pollard," Netanyahu said in a statement on Friday. Just 10 days after he was freed -- not by Afghan or NATO soldiers, but by the once-feared Taliban -- his eyes are still cavernous and sunk, unable to meet anyone else's gaze."I once asked them what my sin was," the 23-year-old said, speaking to AFP in the Kabul home of relatives as his uncle sat listening, sobbing quietly nearby."I told them I was Sunni... They told me I have accepted this government and I deserved to have my head chopped off."Yousuf, an ethnic Tajik engineering student, tells of how he held the head of another hostage in his hands.The government employee was one of three people decapitated right in front of him. "They told him, 'You are against God'."The man's name was Abdul Fatah. "I myself buried his head" to give him some semblance of dignity, Yousuf said.Yousuf's story sheds fresh light on the extreme cruelty of the Islamic State group.The group has made significant gains in Afghanistan, largely boosted by former Taliban cadres and foreign jihadists, while last week's massacre in Paris is testament to both its global reach and the indiscriminate slaughter that Yousuf describes: murder regardless of religion, race or nationality.Yousuf was kidnapped in the southern province of Ghazni in February, when men carrying Kalashnikovs stopped the bus he was riding from western Herat city, where he was living, to Kabul.According to him, the kidnappers were from Uzbekistan -- a country which has long exported jihadists abroad.They told the hostages they wanted to exchange them for comrades who were being held by the government.Along with 30 or so other people, he was taken by car on a journey that lasted "six or seven hours" to the militants' secluded base, believing every minute that he would be killed.There, the torture began. "They would kick us, punch us and beat us up with lashes and sticks," he recounted. "They told us to raise our hands and we had to keep them up for five or six hours."The captives were shackled, blindfolded, and half-starved."There was little to eat and drink," Yousuf said. "A cup of tea in the morning and a piece of bread, two trays of plain boiled rice in the evening for 15 people."They were telling us if the government does not exchange you we will chop off your head. It is not important whether you are Sunni or Shiite. We want to reach our goal."- Taliban rescue -Yousuf had heard of what happened last Friday in Paris, when gunmen opened fire on concert-goers and diners, killing 129 people and sending shockwaves through Europe.The brutality of the slayings did not surprise him.For him, IS fighters are "nothing but the enemies of mankind".Despite government claims that it was behind the rescue operation which freed him and seven other hostages on November 10, Yousuf says the Taliban were his saviours."There was war for three days and three nights," he said, describing the battle between the Taliban insurgents and the Uzbek fighters claiming to be from Islamic State."When the Taliban came and said you are free, still we did not believe it."The Taliban took them to a house and unchained them, he said. The hostages said they were hungry. "They brought us food, yoghurt, stew, rice, much food."The militants then handed them over to local elders, Yousuf said.Observers have described a "charm offensive" launched by the Taliban in recent months as the militants seek to shed their brutal image.This, according to Michael Kugelman, an analyst at the Woodrow Wilson think tank, would allow them to position themselves as a "not so bad" alternative to the government of Kabul."Yes, I am grateful to the Taliban," Yousuf told AFP. "They treated us well."Ten days on, Yousuf says he is "not good".Brought to a hospital after his ordeal, he described being paralysed before a bathroom door for half an hour, believing it was closed and someone was hiding behind it."When I came back really it was open... My mental situation is not good now," he said.He does not know what he will do next. But somehow he still dreams of the future, of being an engineer. He hopes to resume his studies, perhaps in the spring.But not in Herat: he cannot afford to fly, and there is little chance he will go by road."I am too afraid."

Moscow (AFP) - Russia is pounding the Islamic State jihadists in Syria with bombs emblazoned with the words "For our people" and "For Paris" after Moscow vowed vengeance following the bombing of a plane over Sinai.Russian television broadcast a video in which a man is seen scrawling "For our people!" and "For Paris!" in black pen on aerial bombs minutes before a warplane is set to take off from the country's airbase in Syria."For our people! For Paris! Pilots and technicians of airbase sent a message to terrorists by airmail," the Russian defence ministry said on its official Twitter account."The armed forces are conducting an aerial campaign of retribution," the defence ministry said in a separate statement, adding the military had begun coordinating their operations with the French.Earlier this week Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to hunt down and "punish" those behind a bomb attack that brought down a passenger jet over Sinai last month, killing all 224 people, mostly Russian holidaymakers, on board.After the carnage in Paris which claimed the lives of 130 people Putin and French President Francois Hollande agreed to "ensure closer contact and coordination" in their countries' operations in Syria.The two leaders will meet at the Kremlin next week.Unverified images have been circulating on the internet of Syria-bound US missiles bearing the handwritten inscription "From Paris with love".Russia has been conducting a bombing campaign in Syria since September 30, the country's largest foreign intervention outside the former Soviet Union since the occupation of Afghanistan in 1979.The Islamic State group said it had bombed the Russian jet in Egypt in retaliation for the bombing raids.

Beirut (AFP) - More than 1,300 people, around two-thirds of them combatants, have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria since Moscow's aerial campaign began on September 30, a monitor said Friday.The figure supplied by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights is more that double the overall toll it gave in its last report on the Russian campaign three weeks ago.The Britain-based Observatory said it had documented 1,331 deaths in Russian air strikes, most of them of Islamic State group jihadists or other fighters..It said 381 IS fighters had been killed, along with 547 militants from Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front and other rebel forces.The strikes also killed 403 civilians, including 97 children, according to the monitor.The Observatory's last toll for the campaign, on October 29, put the number of killed at nearly 600.Russia says its aerial campaign targets IS and other "terrorists" but rebel forces and their backers accuse Moscow of focusing on moderate and Islamist fighters over jihadists.Several medical groups have also accused Russia of strikes that have hit field clinics and hospitals in Syria.Russia's intervention in Syria follows that of a US-led coalition that has been carrying out strikes against IS in the country since September 2014.The US-led coalition does not coordinate with Damascus however.According to the Observatory, the US-led strikes have killed at least 3,649 people since they began, around six percent of them civilians.The monitor said in late October that US-led raids had killed 3,276 IS fighters, 147 members of Al-Nusra or Islamist groups and 226 civilians.
