Germany irked by Netanyahu’s claim that Merkel disavowed two-state solution-Pro-Israel MP from chancellor’s center-right party to tell PM during visit to Jerusalem that he ‘must not misinterpret’ Berlin’s position-By Raphael Ahren February 28, 2016, 7:09 pm-the times of israel

The German government is reportedly displeased with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for asserting that Chancellor Angela Merkel has changed her stance on a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians, and has dispatched emissaries to Jerusalem clarify Berlin’s position. On February 16, Merkel said at a joint press conference with Netanyahu in Berlin that now is “certainly not the time to make really comprehensive progress.” Netanyahu hailed Merkel’s statement, arguing that the world is slowly coming to a realization he had a long time ago.Sources in the chancellery were “surprised” by Netanyahu’s statement, the German daily Die Welt reported Sunday. Berlin has not changed its position on the need for Palestinian statehood and Netanyahu was told as much during Israel-German government consultations two weeks ago in Berlin, sources told the paper.According to Die Welt, Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of parliament for Merkel’s center-right CDU party, will confront Netanyahu on the issue during a meeting Monday in Jerusalem.“Netanyahu is usually very clear. Therefore he must state clearly that he holds on to the two-state solution. Most of all, he must not abuse visits at Israel’s closest friend in Europe — Germany — to misinterpret Germany’s position,” said Kiesewetter, a defense expert with a long history of staunch support for Israel.Kiesewetter, who is visiting Israel this week as part of a delegation of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee, was not the only member of Merkel’s party to come out against Netanyahu. Jürgen Hardt, the foreign policy spokesperson of the CDU’s parliamentary faction, warned that “a misinterpretation of the chancellor’s position for political gains in Israel would strain bilateral relations.”The foreign policy spokesperson of the center-left SPD, which forms a part of Merkel’s coalition, declared that Germany continues to call for a two-state solution that guarantees a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. “This position is also not going to change through a very creative interpretation of the chancellor,” Niels Annen said.Even members of the opposition criticized Netanyahu. “The chancellor rightfully brought up the stagnation in the Holy Land, which is frustrating for us all,” said the foreign policy spokesperson of Greens, Omid Nouripour. “To turn this into an disavowal of the two-state solution shows what is lacking most for a solution of the conflict: political will.”Left Party MP Stefan Liebich, who will also meet Netanyahu on Monday in Jerusalem, told Die Welt that he wants to address the issue together with his colleagues from center-right CDU: “In our conversation with Netanyahu we will make clear that there has not been any change to the policy of the Federal Republic of Germany. And that we are very surprised about reports claiming otherwise.”During their press conference after the February 16 meeting in Berlin, Merkel said that Germany wants to be realistic about prospects for peace in the Middle East.“We know the threat of terrorism that Israel has to endure. We believe, on the other hand, that we have to advance a process of peaceful coexistence, and this, according to our opinion, is ultimately built on a two-state solution.” She added: “Now is certainly not the time to make really comprehensive progress, but you can achieve improvements in certain places.”Netanyahu, during a subsequent briefing for the traveling press, hailed Merkel’s statement, arguing that the world has slowly been coming to the same realization he had arrived at long ago. “When I said it a year ago, everyone came out and attacked me viciously,” he said.“Today we hear same things from the leaders of the world, not only from [US President Barack] Obama [who has stated he no longer believes Israeli-Palestinian peace can be achieved in the coming months] and Merkel. Even the leader of the opposition [in Israel, Isaac Herzog] understands it now.”

PA demands control over Iran cash handouts to terrorists-After Tehran announces $7,000 payment per ‘shahid,’ Abbas spokesman says funds must go via PA, to avoid illegal interference in its internal affairs-By Times of Israel staff and AFP February 28, 2016, 7:52 pm

The Palestinian Authority on Sunday said direct financial assistance by Iran to the families of Palestinian terrorists and attackers killed in a five-month wave of violence would be unacceptable, and called for such funding to be directed through a PA .Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a PA presidency spokesman, was quoted in local media as saying that bypassing the Authority in handing out such funds would constitute illegal interference in internal Palestinian affairs.Tehran announced last week assistance would be offered to families of those killed in the wave of Palestinian stabbing, car-ramming and shooting attacks that erupted in October 2015. The PA official did not reject the payments, but said such aid must follow official channels.Iran should “send this money through official channels to the [PA’s] Martyrs and Prisoners Foundation rather than relying on informal and circuitous routes,” Abu Rudeineh said.Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mohammad Fathali, said Wednesday that Tehran would offer $7,000 to the families of each Palestinian killed in what he called the “Jerusalem intifada.”Iran will also give $30,000 to Palestinian terrorists’ families whose homes are destroyed by Israel, he told a news conference in Beirut. The money pledged is in addition to the monthly aid paid since 1987 by an Iranian institution to families of Palestinians killed, the ambassador said.Twenty-eight Israelis and three foreign nationals have been killed in a wave of Palestinian terrorism and violence since October. Nearly 170 Palestinians have also been killed, some two-thirds of them while attacking Israelis, and the rest during clashes with troops, according to the Israeli army.Iran has been accused of providing support to Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip and is a rival to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party. Fatah dominates the Palestinian Authority.Palestinian economists have questioned whether Iran would be capable of distributing the aid to the families directly via banks since it could be considered “terrorism financing.”The day after Iran’s announcement, Israel denounced the decision, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying it showed Tehran was “continuing to aid terrorism.” Netanyahu has also repeatedly accused the PA of helping to incite the current round of Palestinian terrorism.

Iran said withdrawing all its fighting forces from Syria-After 160 fatalities, Tehran pulling back all 2,500 troops, TV report says, although hundreds of military advisers will remain-By Times of Israel staff and AFP February 28, 2016, 8:18 pm

Iran is withdrawing all of its 2,500-strong fighting force from Syria, Israeli television reported Sunday night. Most of the forces have already been returned home, and the rest are on their way out, Channel 2 said. It said the decision was taken by Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani. The forces, drawn from various units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, have been increasingly deployed to fight alongside President Bashar Assad’s forces for more than the past two years. They have sustained some 160 fatalities, with over 300 injured, the TV report said. Among the dead are at least six senior officers, including generals and colonels. The report did not specify a single reason for the withdrawal, which comes amid a fragile new cease-fire in the bitter civil war, but highlighted an Iranian tradition, breached by their deployment, not to deploy fighting forces beyond the immediate area of Iran. The report said 700 Iranian military advisers were staying in Syria, to assist Assad.Tehran will also continue to arm and support Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement, which has itself dispatched forces to shore up the Syrian regime against local rebel forces, the report said. Iran last week also made explicit that it is funding Palestinian terror attacks against Israel, announcing the specifics of payments to “shahids” and their families. The tide of the civil war has turned in Assad’s favor of late, since President Vladimir Putin stepped up Russia’s involvement in the fighting with Assad against rebel forces. The TV report followed US Secretary of State John Kerry’s testimony in Congress last week, to the effect that Iran had withdrawn a “significant number” of its IRGC troops from the Syrian battlefield.“The IRGC has actually pulled its troops back from Syria. Ayatollah Khamenei pulled a significant number of troops out. Their presence is actually reduced in Syria,” Kerry told US lawmakers.“That doesn’t mean that they’re still not engaged and active in the flow of weapons from Syria through Damascus to Lebanon,” Kerry stressed. “We’re concerned about that and there’s an ongoing concern.”Tehran has never released official figures for the number of its troops present in Syria.

adds, stressing that Turkey was a member of a US-led coalition. No other details are provided by the Russian side.— AFP-13:43-Airstrikes reported in northern Syria-Syria’s fragile ceasefire enters a second day with battle zones still largely quiet for the first time in five years, despite sporadic incidents including several airstrikes. The truce, brokered by Washington and Moscow, is seen as a crucial step towards ending a conflict that has claimed 270,000 lives and displaced more than half the population. The convoluted patchwork of territorial control in Syria, wrapped up in a brutal civil war since 2011, has complicated efforts to implement the deal.Warplanes, believed to be either Syrian or Russian, bomb seven villages Sunday in the northern province of Aleppo and Hama in the center, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It is unclear if the raids hit areas covered by the ceasefire, which excludes territory held by the Islamic State jihadist group and Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front.According to Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman, only one of the villages, Kafr Hamra in Aleppo province, is controlled by Al-Nusra and the others are in the hands of non-jihadist rebels.— AFP.
