Gravitational waves: Why the fuss?-Breakthrough opens exciting new avenues in astronomy, adds to evidence that black holes — never directly observed — do actually exist-By MariĆ«tte Le Roux February 11, 2016, 7:57 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
Great excitement rippled through the physics world Thursday at the announcement that gravitational waves have been detected after a 100-year search. Here’s what it means.Q: What are gravitational waves?-A: Albert Einstein predicted gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity a century ago. Under this theory, space and time are interwoven into something called “spacetime” — adding a fourth dimension to our concept of the Universe, in addition to our 3D perception of it.Einstein predicted that mass warps space-time through its gravitational force. A common analogy is to view space-time as a trampoline, and mass as a bowling ball placed on it. Objects on the trampoline’s surface will “fall” towards the centre — representing gravity. When objects with mass accelerate, such as when two black holes spiral towards each other, they send waves along the curved space-time around them at the speed of light, like ripples on a pond. The more massive the object, the larger the wave and the easier for scientists to detect.Gravitational waves do not interact with matter and travel through the Universe completely unimpeded. The strongest waves are caused by the most cataclysmic processes in the Universe — black holes coalescing, massive stars exploding, or the very birth of the Universe some 13.8 billion years ago.Q: Why is the detection of gravitational waves important? A: It ended the search for proof of a key prediction in Einstein’s theory, which changed the way that humanity perceived key concepts like space and time.Detectable gravitational waves open exciting new avenues in astronomy — allowing measurements of faraway stars, galaxies and black holes based on the waves they make.Indirectly, it also adds to the evidence that black holes — never directly observed — do actually exist.So-called primordial gravitational waves, the hardest kind to detect and not implicated in Thursday’s announcement, would boost another leading theory of cosmology, that of “inflation” or exponential expansion of the infant Universe.Primordial waves are theorised to still be resonating throughout the Universe today, though feebly. If they are found, they would tell us about the energy scale at which inflation ocurred, shedding light on the Big Bang itself. Q: Why are gravitational waves they so elusive? A: Einstein himself doubted gravitational waves would ever be detected given how small they are.Ripples emitted by a pair of merging black holes, for example, would stretch a one-million-kilometre (621,000-mile) ruler on Earth by less than the size of an atom.Waves coming from tens of millions of lightyears away would deform a four-kilometre light beam such as those used at the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) by about the width of a proton.Q: How have we looked for them? A: Before now, gravitational waves had only been detected indirectly. In 1974, scientists found that the orbits of a pair of neutron stars in our galaxy, circling a common centre of mass, were getting smaller at a rate consistent with a loss of energy through gravitational waves. That discovery earned the Nobel Physics Prize in 1993. Experts say the first direct detection of gravitational waves is likely to be bestowed the same honour. After American physicist Joseph Weber built the first aluminium cylinder-based detectors in the 1960s, decades of effort followed using telescopes, satellites and laser beams.Earth- and space-based telescopes have been trained on cosmic microwave background, a faint glow of light left over from the Big Bang, for evidence of it being curved and stretched by gravitational waves.Using this method, American astrophysicists announced two years ago they had identified gravitational waves using a telescope called BICEP2, stationed at the South Pole. But they later had to admit they made an error.Another technique involves detecting small changes in distances between objects.Gravitational waves passing through an object distort its shape, stretching and squeezing it in the direction the wave is travelling, leaving a telltale, though miniscule, effect.Detectors such as LIGO at the centre of Thursday’s news, and its sister detector Virgo in Italy, are designed to pick up such distortions in laser light beams. At LIGO, scientists split the light into two perpendicular beams that travel over several kilometres to be reflected by mirrors back to the point where they started.Any difference in length upon their return would point to the influence of gravitational waves.Sources: European Space Agency, Institute of Physics, LIGO, Nature.
Century after Einstein predicted them, scientists glimpse gravitational waves for first time-‘The skies will never be the same’: In landmark discovery, billion-year-old vibration in space-time reaches underground detectors in US-By Agencies February 11, 2016, 7:35 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
WASHINGTON — In an announcement that electrified the world of astronomy, international scientists said Thursday they have finally glimpsed the first direct evidence of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time, which Albert Einstein predicted a century ago. Some scientists likened the breakthrough to the moment Galileo took up a telescope to look at the planets. The discovery of these waves, created by violent collisions of massive celestial objects, excites astronomers because it opens the door to a new way of observing the cosmos. For them, it’s like turning a silent movie into a talkie because these waves are the soundtrack of the universe.“Until this moment we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn’t hear the music,” said Columbia University astrophysicist Szabolcs Marka, a member of the discovery team. “The skies will never be the same.”When two black holes collided some 1.3 billion years ago, the joining of those two great masses sent forth a wobble that hurtled through space and arrived at Earth on September 14, 2015, when it was picked up by sophisticated instruments, researchers announced.“Like Galileo first pointing his telescope upward, this new view of the sky will deepen our understanding of the cosmos, and lead to unexpected discoveries,” said France Cordova, director of the US National Science Foundation, which funded the work. The phenomenon was observed by two US-based underground detectors, designed to spot tiny vibrations from passing gravitational waves, a project known as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or LIGO.It took scientists months to verify their data and put it through a process of peer-review before announcing it on Thursday, marking the culmination of decades of efforts by teams around the world.“LIGO has ushered in the birth of an entirely new field of astrophysics,” said Cordova.Gravitational waves are a measure of strain in space, an effect of the motion of large masses that stretches the fabric of space-time — a way of viewing space and time as a single, interweaved continuum. They travel at the speed of light and cannot be stopped or blocked by anything.Einstein said space-time could be compared to a net, bowing under the weight of an object. Gravitational waves would be like ripples that emanate from a pebble thrown in a pond. While scientists have previously been able to calculate gravitational waves, they had never before seen one directly.-Wobbling like jelly-According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) David Shoemaker, the leader of the LIGO team, it looked just like physicists thought it would.“The waveform that we can calculate based on Einstein’s theory of 1916 matches exactly what we observed in 2015,” David Shoemaker, the leader of the LIGO team, told AFP.“It looked like a chirp, it looked at something that started at low frequencies — for us low frequencies means 20 or 30 hertz, that’s like the lowest note on a bass guitar, sweeping very rapidly up over just a fraction of a second… up to 150 hertz or so, sort of near middle C on a piano.”The chirp “corresponded to the orbit of these two black holes getting smaller and smaller, and the speed of the two objects going faster and faster until the two became a single object,” he explained.“And then right at the end of this waveform, we see the wobbling of the final black hole as if it were made of jelly as it settled into a static state.”“The description of this observation is beautifully described in the Einstein theory of general relativity formulated 100 years ago and comprises the first test of the theory in strong gravitation,” LIGO team member Rainer Weiss, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said in a statement reported by space.com. “It would have been wonderful to watch Einstein’s face had we been able to tell him.”-Underground detectors-The L-shaped LIGO detectors — each about 1.5 kilometers (four kilometers) long — were conceived and built by researchers at MIT and Caltech. One is located in Hanford, Washington, and the other is in Livingston, Louisiana.A third detector, called VIRGO, is scheduled to open in Italy later this year.Tuck Stebbins, head of the gravitational astrophysics laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center, described the detectors as the “most complex machines humans have ever built.”Both LIGO and VIRGO have undergone major upgrades in recent years.Physicist Benoit Mours of France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), which is leading the VIRGO team along with Italian colleagues, described the discovery as “historic” because it “allows us to directly verify one of the predictions of the theory of general relativity.”Physicists said the gravitational wave detected at 1651 GMT on September 14 originated in the last fraction of a second before the fusion of two black holes somewhere in the southern sky, though they can’t say precisely where.Einstein had predicted such a phenomenon would occur when two black holes collided, but it had never before been observed. An analysis by MIT and Caltech found that the two black holes joined about 1.3 billion years ago, and their mass was 29-36 times greater than the Sun.The wave arrived first at the Louisiana detector, then at the Washington instrument 7.1 milliseconds later. The two instruments are 1,800 miles (3,000 kilometers) apart, and since both made the same reading, scientists consider their discovery confirmed.-‘New era’-“Black holes are interesting because they do not give off any light and that is why these particular objects had never been seen before — because all of the astrophysical instruments to date use light,” said Shoemaker.“So this is one of the ways in which this tool is special and unique in the astronomical toolkit.”He said the new data “can really help to explain the formation of galaxies and overall large scale structures of the material in the universe.”Details of the discovery are being published in the journal Physical Review Letters.Indirect proof of gravitational waves was found in 1974 through the study of a pulsar and a neutron star. Scientists Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor won the Nobel Prize for physics for that work in 1993.“Humanity has now another tool for exploring the universe,” Stebbins told AFP.“This is like the perfect outcome. The door is open to new discoveries,” he added.“This is a new era in astrophysics.”
Technology | Thu Feb 11, 2016 7:45am EST-Ripple effect: scientists await word on gravitational waves-reuters
WASHINGTON | By Will Dunham-A century ago, Albert Einstein hypothesized the existence of gravitational waves, small ripples in space and time that dash across the universe at the speed of light. But scientists have been able to find only indirect evidence of their existence. On Thursday, at a news conference called by the U.S. National Science Foundation, researchers may announce at long last direct observations of the elusive waves.Such a discovery would represent a scientific landmark, opening the door to an entirely new way to observe the cosmos and unlock secrets about the early universe and mysterious objects like black holes and neutron stars.Scientists from the California Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the LIGO Scientific Collaboration are set to make what they bill as a "status report" on Thursday on the quest to detect gravitational waves. It is widely expected they will announce they have achieved their goal."Let's say this: The first discovery of gravitational waves is a Nobel Prize-winning venture," said physicist Bruce Allen of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover, Germany."I believe in the next decade, our view of the universe is going to change really quite dramatically," added Abhay Ashtekar, director of Penn State University's Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos.Einstein in 1916 proposed the existence of these waves as an outgrowth of his ground-breaking general theory of relativity."Gravitational waves are literally ripples in the curvature of space-time that are caused by collisions of heavy and compact objects like black holes and neutron stars," Ashtekar said.-'MOVING MASSES'-"They're waves, like light or any other kind of electromagnetic radiation, except here what's 'waving' is space and time itself," said NASA astrophysicist Ira Thorpe, with the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. "You get radiation, basically light, when you move some sort of charged particle. When you're moving masses, you get gravitational waves."Scientists have been trying to detect them using two large laser instruments in the United States, known together as the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as another in Italy. The twin LIGO installations are located roughly 1,800 miles (3,000 km) apart in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington. Having two detectors is a way to sift out terrestrial rumblings, such as traffic and earthquakes, from the faint ripples of space itself. The LIGO work is funded by the National Science Foundation, an independent agency of the U.S. government. All the current knowledge about the universe comes from electromagnetic waves like radio waves, visible light, infrared light, X-rays and gamma rays. But a lot of information remains hidden because such waves get scattered as they traverse the cosmos. That would not be the case with gravitational waves, making them an enticing potential source of new information. Two types of very massive and dense celestial objects, neutron stars and black holes, have proven tough to study but could offer ideal subjects if observations of gravitational waves are possible."People don't really know what's going on inside neutron stars," Allen said of these objects that weigh about 50 percent more than the sun but are extremely compact, only about the size of a city."It gives us a detailed picture of what's happening inside or around the object that's producing the waves. So, for example, if two black holes orbit each other, we can't see it any way other than gravitational waves because black holes don't emit any light, radio waves, X-rays or anything. The only way to see that is through their gravitational waves," Allen said.Gravitational waves also offer a way to study what the universe was like in its infancy. For the first roughly 200,000 years of its existence, light did not travel freely through the universe, Allen said, but "gravitational waves can travel freely, back to very early times.""So one cool thing is one day we'll be able to see what the universe looked like in very early times using gravitational waves. That's what actually got me interested in the field 25 years ago," Allen said.(Additional reporting by Irene Klotz in Cape Canaveral, Florida; Editing by Tom Brown)

Egypt’s Sissi hosts 36 American Jewish leaders-Participants mum about details of two-hour conversation, which focused on Israel-Egypt security ties-By Times of Israel staff February 11, 2016, 5:29 pm
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi met on Thursday with a group of American Jewish leaders for over two hours in the Egyptian capital Cairo. The 36-strong delegation from the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations met with a series of Egyptian officials, including Sissi, for talks focused on Egypt’s close security cooperation with Israel. While leaders who took part in the meeting were reticent about what was said, Sissi’s comments were described as “positive.”“We came away with a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities and how we can play a constructive role in addressing them and fostering international cooperation,” Conference leaders said in a statement. The statement said the talks “covered a wide range of domestic and international issues, including US-Egyptian and Israeli-Egyptian relations, regional threats, especially those posed by terrorist organizations and their supporters, and Iran post-JCPOA” (the nuclear deal signed last July).Sissi’s government has closely allied with Israel on key security issues, including Egypt’s war against Islamic State-affiliated jihadists in Sinai and on both countries’ blockade of Hamas-ruled Gaza. The meeting in Cairo comes two days after the American Jewish delegation, led by the conference’s executive vice chairman Malcolm Hoenlein, met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at his Istanbul residence. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also met the group. That meeting marked the first time that American Jewish leaders have met with Turkish officials since a 2009 meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Erdogan angrily denounced Israel over the war with Hamas in Gaza that year, marking the start of a chill in relations between Ankara and Jerusalem.Erdogan told a Turkish newspaper in December last year that he hoped to reestablish ties with Israel.“Israel is in need of a country like Turkey in the region,” Erdogan told Turkish media in January. “And we, too, must accept that we need Israel. This is a reality in the region. If mutual steps are implemented based on sincerity, then normalization will follow.
Right-winger arrested for death threats against chairman, Arab party says-Joint List says activist was reacting to Ayman Odeh’s statements on social media in support of Palestinian cause-By Lee Gancman February 11, 2016, 5:32 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
The police have arrested a right-wing activist who made death threats against Ayman Odeh, the head of the Joint (Arab) List, a party spokesman said Thursday. The spokesman said the activist threatened Odeh over the latter’s statements on social media expressing his support for the Palestinian cause.“Police are investigating the threats in conjunction with Knesset member Odeh and are trying to determine whether the threats were issued against him directly,” a Joint List statement said.A police spokeswoman told The Times of Israel that the force was “looking into” the affair.A statement by Odeh said that, “There are those who want us to be either like domesticated animals or [in] a nature reserve, separated from our surroundings. We will continue our struggle using our unique position here, to stand alongside the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to resist the occupation, and to achieve our rights here in our homeland, which is the only one we have.”Odeh blamed Netanyahu and the government for the “current climate of incitement,” adding “this threat confirms that we are on the correct path of a national and humanitarian narrative that is both courageous and responsible.”
Palestine’ reference, Israel omission was inadvertent, Trivia Crack says-Mobile app maker apologizes for inaccurate content Israeli players found offensive-By David Shamah February 11, 2016, 7:04 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL
In response to a user complaint, an Argentina-based start-up has dropped a question about Palestine, a country that does not currently exist, from its mobile game, and has apologized for seemingly having written Israel out of the region.Trivia Crack said its publisher, Etermax, gets its quiz questions from online contributors – meaning that “every once in a while certain malicious users will find a way around it. In these rare cases our staff takes care of it immediately.”The response came after a query by The Times of Israel about a question that was noticed by an Israeli player of Trivia Crack, Etermax’s Trivial Pursuit-style mobile game.Like its board game model, Trivia Crack consists of questions in six knowledge categories: Entertainment, Art, Sports, History, Science and Geography. Users spin a virtual wheel, and when the app lands on a category, it presents players with a question on that category. If they get it wrong, the question is presented to an online opponent chosen at random. The offending question showed up when a player chose the Geography category, with the app flashing a question reading “Which countries surround Palestine?” The player was presented with four choices: “Jordan, Syria, and Egypt,” “Iran, Lebanon, and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” “Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt,” or “Syria and Lebanon.”Israel was nowhere to be seen.An alert player questioned the question. “As any geopolitical expert can tell you, there is currently no ‘Palestine’; the official name of the areas in the West Bank and Gaza not under Israeli jurisdiction is the ‘Palestinian Authority,’” wrote the player. “Also if one were to consider [the West Bank and Gaza] as Palestine one would expect to see Israel as a country in the area.”The question as stated was not a challenge to the existence of Israel, the Trivia Crack team said – but a mistake.“We would like to apologize personally for the recent inaccurate and ill-disposed content that has surfaced,” the company said. “The original poster of the question has been dealt with and removed from the game, as well as the question itself.“Here at Trivia Crack we constantly strive to maintain an atmosphere appropriate for everyone. Before entering the Question Factory to create a question, a notice appears warning that any user submitting offensive content will be blocked from the game,” it added. “Our users’ input is invaluable to the game, and we urge you to continue to report any offensive or inaccurate content you may see.”

COULD THE FALLING STARS-PLANETS BE PLEIADES AND ORION-JUST MY THOUGHT
Historically, the Pleiades were seen as a group of seven stars – its brightest stars: Alcyone, Atlas, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta and Pleione are visible to the keen naked eye. However modern observations show that this most famous of open clusters is comprised of several hundred stars wreathed in intricately structured nebulosity. As the Pleiades cluster is close to the ecliptic (within 4°) in the constellation of Taurus it is a spring and autumnal 'seasonal' object in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Being close to the ecliptic, there are frequent occultations of the cluster with the Moon and planets. To our superstitious ancestors these were, no doubt, portentious events. Likewise, the apparent annual motion of the cluster would have been highly significant. The heliacal (near dawn) rising of the Pleiades in spring in the northern hemisphere has from ancient times augured the opening of the seafaring and farming season: while its dawn autumnal setting marked the season's end.And also Spring and fall are Bird migration seasons in Israel. It would not surprise me if Israeli wars are not fought around the time of the Pleiades-Orion happenings. The Bible contains three direct references to the Pleiades in Job 9:9 and 38:31, and Amos 5:8, and a single indirect reference in the New Testament. This latter passage (Revelation 1:16) describes a vision of the coming of the Messiah – who holds, in his right hand, seven stars.Well since the meteors do hit the earth in the last 6 months of the 7 year tribulation period.I believe.Jesus' return will be only 6 months or so from happening. So this Pieades (meteorites) earth hit would be warning the world that Jesus is about to return to earth literally.
