Ryan joins Pence to urge Republicans to ‘come home’ for Trump-House speaker, who has publicly been at odds with his GOP party’s nominee, says free speech, gun rights and health care are at stake-By Scott Bauer November 5, 2016, 9:36 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

MUKWONAGO, Wis. (AP) — House Speaker Paul Ryan and Donald Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, joined Saturday in a gesture of Republican unity at a rally in Wisconsin’s most conservative county, a month after Ryan said he would no longer defend or campaign with Trump. Both Pence and Ryan said it was time for Republicans to “come home” and vote for Trump. Pence heaped praise on Ryan, calling him a friend and great conservative leader, just days after he declined to say whether Ryan should be re-elected speaker. Both are possible White House hopefuls in the future. Another potential 2020 contender, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, also came to the rally. The governor warmed to the divisive nominee after dropping his own presidential campaign.Pence and Ryan hugged before being joined by Walker and others.Pence called Ryan a friend who as speaker would help Trump enact his agenda as president.“Paul Ryan is one of the great conservative leaders in America and Wisconsin should be proud,” Pence said.Ryan’s awkward relationship with Trump hit a low point a month ago when the speaker canceled Trump’s appearance at what was to be a Republican unity rally in Wisconsin. That followed the disclosure of a 2005 video in which Trump made crude comments about imposing himself on women. Ryan, who was booed at that event, said then he would not defend or campaign with the nominee. The only booing Saturday was directed at Hillary Clinton. Ryan told the crowd he voted early for Trump “because it is time to come home and go out and vote.” Ryan said free speech, gun rights and health care are at stake.“When Donald Trump says that he wants a special session to repeal and replace Obamacare, let me tell you as speaker of the House we are ready, we are willing and we have a plan to do that,” Ryan said. “But that only happens if we win this election.”Saturday’s rally was in deeply Republican Waukesha County.

Trump pressing into Democratic territory in final days-Republican candidate heads to battleground states in last push before election-By Lisa Lerer and Steve Peoples November 6, 2016, 1:50 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) — Fighting as a party of one, Donald Trump vowed Saturday to press into Democratic strongholds over the campaign’s final days as Hillary Clinton looked to an army of A-list celebrities and politicos to defend her narrowing path to the presidency. The divisive Republican outsider conceded he was largely on his own — even as he promised to march into Minnesota, a state that hasn’t backed a GOP presidential nominee in more than four decades.“Hillary Clinton has all of these celebrities and failed politicians out campaigning for her,” a defiant Trump declared in North Carolina, one of four battleground states he was visiting on Saturday. “I just have me, but I have my family.”Responding to Trump’s push, Democrat Clinton announced plans to devote valuable attention to Michigan, another unlikely battleground where both she and President Obama planned to campaign on Monday. The Democratic nominee faced dark skies Saturday in Florida, fighting intense rain and wind in a key battleground state before a Pennsylvania appearance with pop singer Katy Perry. Clinton was preparing to campaign Sunday with basketball superstar Lebron James, having shared the stage the night before with music diva BeyoncĂ© and hip hop mogul husband Jay Z.“My personal favorite part — BeyoncĂ© had her backup singers in pantsuits” Clinton said with a laugh in Pembroke Pines, Florida. The final-days scramble highlighted sharp differences between the campaigns in a turbulent 2016 campaign season.Backed by President Barack Obama and her party’s political elite, Clinton spent much of the last year fighting to unify Obama’s coalition of minorities and younger voters, aided at times by Trump’s deep unpopularity among women in both parties.Trump has courted working-class white voters on the strength of his own celebrity, having scared off many would-be Republican allies during a campaign marred by extraordinary gaffes and self-created crises. Just four weeks ago, a video emerged in which a married Trump admitted to kissing women and grabbing their genitalia without their permission.Even with the damaging video, Clinton faced extraordinary challenges of her own in recent days after the FBI confirmed plans to renew its focus on the former secretary of state’s email practices. The development is seen as particularly threatening for Clinton in states, like Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire that don’t offer early voting. At least 41 million Americans across 48 states have already cast ballots, according to an Associated Press analysis. That’s significantly more votes four days before Election Day than voted early in the 2012.House Speaker Paul Ryan campaigned Saturday alongside Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence — a rare show of unity, but not with Trump himself. The speaker encouraged Republicans to “come home” to support Trump in Ryan’s home-state Wisconsin, ignoring for a day his icy relationship with the Republican nominee.Trump has frustrated party leaders in many ways, particularly by ignoring the hard work that fuels most successful modern-day campaigns. The Republican outsider has done little to collect data on prospective supporters. He has no significant staffing presence on the ground in key states. And he has been unwilling to invest in a major advertising campaign to keep pace with his Democratic rival.Clinton’s campaign has spent more than $267 million in television advertising through Election Day. Trump, who claims a net worth of roughly $10 billion, has invested $93 million, according to data collected by Kantar Media. His entire campaign strategy has hinged on an aggressive schedule packed with massive rallies. The path of his luxury campaign jet has been fueled by somewhat risky ambition at times, however.Rather than hunkering down in must-win Florida this weekend, Trump flew Saturday to Democratic-leaning territory: Wilmington, North Carolina, then Reno, Nevada, and Denver. And as defiant as ever, he promised to make subsequent appearances in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Minnesota.Minnesota hasn’t cast its electoral votes for a Republican since 1972. A Republican nominee hasn’t won Michigan or Pennsylvania since 1988.“We’re going into what they used to call Democrat strongholds, where we’re now either tied or leading,” he said in Florida.Later in the day in North Carolina appearance, he mocked Clinton’s schedule: “She doesn’t have what it takes to do rallies all over the place. She wants to go home and go to sleep.”Trump may not have Clinton’s celebrities, but he has relied on his family for public support at times. On Saturday, he made a rare campaign stop with his wife, Melania Trump, whose appearance came as The Associated Press revealed more details about her early employment in the U.S.The AP found that Melania Trump was paid for modeling jobs in the United States worth $20,056 that occurred in the seven weeks before she had legal permission to work in the country, according to detailed accounting ledgers, contracts and related documents from 20 years ago. While showering his wife with affection, Trump also boasted Saturday that he doesn’t need stars to fill his venues. He campaigned Saturday with retired football coach Lou Holtz and actor Joe Piscopo. An event with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie that was scheduled for Saturday was canceled after two of his top aides were found guilty Friday on all counts for their roles in the George Washington Bridge lane-closure scandal.“We do it the old-fashioned way,” Trump said.

PM hails ‘tremendous’ contribution of Israel’s immigrants-On eve of first ‘Aliyah Day’ holiday, Netanyahu says influx of Jews is ‘fulfillment of biblical prophecy’-By Times of Israel staff November 7, 2016, 6:35 pm

A day before Israel marks its first official “Aliyah Day” holiday to honor its immigrants, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday praised their “tremendous contribution” to the country. The Knesset passed the National Aliyah Day into law in June, with 21 Knesset members in favor and five opposed. Literally “ascension,” aliyah is a Hebrew term used to refer to Jewish immigration to Israel.Nearly all Israelis, if not immigrants themselves, are the descendants of immigrants, many of whom fled Europe before and after the Holocaust, or were expelled from Arab countries in the early 1950s.“The contribution of so many different communities is so broad and deep,” Netanyahu said at a meeting of his Likud party’s MKs. The prime minister also praised immigrants’ contribution to Israel’s relationship with the countries from which they emigrated.“I see it in Russia, in Ukraine, in France. They don’t just contribute to Israel, they contribute to Israel’s foreign relations,” he said.“Aliyah is the foundation of the state of the Jews and the fulfillment of the biblical prophecy of the Jewish people returning to its land and building it.”The new holiday, which will be celebrated on Tuesday this year, was the result of a bill by MKs Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beytenu) of the former Soviet Union, Avraham Neguise (Likud), Israel’s sole Ethiopian-born Israeli in parliament, Hilik Bar (Zionist Union), Micky Zohar (Likud) and other lawmakers. As part of Tuesday’s events, Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky and Immigration Minister Sofa Landver will take part in a special meeting of the Immigration Committee to mark the day.The day will be marked by celebrations in the Knesset, a special cabinet session, and events at the President’s Residence, in schools, the army, and the police force, the law stipulates.Marissa Newman contributed to this report.

Canadian Jews press government to accept Yazidi refugees-Yazidi families fleeing IS brutality are being privately sponsored by Jewish donors to come to Canada-By Emily Rose November 6, 2016, 10:03 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

In June, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, Manitoba, launched Operation Ezra, which brought the first privately sponsored Yazidi family of refugees to Canada. Now it has taken on the mission to lead the charge in refugee relief and press the government to take in more families.Yazidis are an ethnically Kurdish religious minority who have suffered brutality at the hands of the radical Islamic State group. During a systematic campaign against the Yazidis in 2014 in Sinjar, near Mosul, an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 civilians were killed and 5,000 to 7,000 abducted and enslaved, most of them women and children, according to the Global Yazidi Organization.According to assessments, there are currently some 400,000 Yazidis in northern Iraq and Syria who are still in danger of murder and enslavement at the hands of IS terrorists. The Operation Ezra coalition of Winnipeg, founded for the purpose of helping Yazidis fleeing prosecution, recently announced that it had “raised just under $300,000” to help them.“The monies collected go directly to supporting the families being sponsored through Operation Ezra,” the organization announced, and stated that “to date, the organization has submitted applications for a total of seven families, or 42 people altogether.”The Canadian government allows for private sponsorship of refugees, but dictates that sponsors are 100% financially responsible for the refugees for the first 12 months after their arrival in the country. After that, the government bears financial responsibility for the family if needed. Operation Ezra also aims to help integrate those families into the community so that they can eventually sustain themselves.Michel Aziza, a member of the Winnipeg Jewish Community and a co-founder of the Operation Ezra coalition of Winnipeg, said he was inspired to help the Yazidis because their plight reminded him of that suffered by European Jews during the Holocaust.“Our group reached out to the Yazidi Community in March 2015, ” he told The Times of Israel, “to learn more about their plight and see what we, as a small group of individuals, could do to help.”Shortly after launching Operation Ezra as a grassroots project, Aziza reached out to both the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and Jewish Child and Family Services and asked if they would take the lead, allowing them to make the project a community-wide endeavor with far greater reach.“This is ultimately what happened,” Aziza said, “and over the weeks and months that followed, we formed a coalition of 22 agencies and organizations.”Now the organization is focused on changing Canadian policy and pressuring the government to accept more refugees. Last month, Canadian MPs voted unanimously to declare IS persecution against the Yazidis a genocide and vowed to bring Yazidi refugees fleeing persecution to Canada within four months.“We reached out to as many MP’s as we could,” Aziza said, “and reached out to senior members of the current government. We held meetings with them, we had calls with them, we developed concepts and ideas for the government to consider. We even attended a parliamentary committee dealing with the plight of refugees in Ottawa last July.”“We are the only organized effort focused on rescuing Yazidi refugees in North America. No one else has done what we have been able to accomplish so far,” Aziza said.He said that The Jewish community of Winnipeg had rallied in order to help the refugees who were brought through Operation Ezra, helping them to adjust to their new home. He was happy to report that the family he had sponsored was doing well and that the kids were all enrolled in public school.“We set up a small house for them and furnished the home with donated goods from the Community as well as corporate sponsors like the Salvation Army and even IKEA,” Aziza said.He said Operation Ezra constituted a community-wide effort to save lives.“The Yazidi people we work with are infinitely grateful for what we have done,” he said. “We are the only community to have reached out to them and taken the lead in helping them save their own people. It is an amazing feeling.”

PM insists on impartiality, as Herzog warns against meddling in US election-Opposition leader accuses Netanyahu proxies of interference, says ‘Israeli politicians should stay out of American business’-By Raoul Wootliff November 7, 2016, 4:55 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday reiterated his impartial stance on the US elections, telling a meeting of his Likud faction that bilateral ties would remain intact whoever wins on Tuesday.“Whatever the result, the relationship between Israel and the US will remain strong and steadfast,” the prime minister said, a day after instructing cabinet ministers to refrain from commenting on the election.Stressing that the relationship was based on both “joint values” and “joint interests,” Netanyahu said the American public views Israel as its strongest ally.“A recent Gallup poll showed that the US support for Israel gets stronger and stronger ever year,” he said. “I’ll repeat what I said in Congress last year: Israel has no better friend than the US and the US has no better friend than Israel.”The prime minister’s comments came shortly after opposition leader Isaac Herzog urged him not to take sides in the elections. Such Israeli interference, Herzog said at a meeting of his Zionist Union faction, “will only damage the Israeli public.”Calling the race between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump “the most important election in the world,” Herzog said all Israeli politicians should stay out of America’s business.“Recently there have again been reports of Israeli leaders interfering in the elections through overseas proxies,” he said.“I call on Netanyahu to instruct those close to him to make sure no damage is done,” he said, without elaborating or naming any alleged culprits.During the previous US elections in 2012 Netanyahu was accused of leaning toward Republican candidate Mitt Romney and, in subtle ways, trying to aid his campaign for the White House. At the same Zionist Union meeting, the first after Saturday’s Tel Aviv rally in memory of slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Herzog said that if hatred and incitement had been dealt with appropriately 21 years ago, the assassination could have been prevented.“I will not allow anyone to spread hatred – not the head of the coalition, not a minister, no one,” he said, referencing coalition chair David Bitan’s statement that Rabin’s assassination was “not political.” Denouncing Bitan’s comments, which came shortly before the rally, became the central theme of the memorial.“Twenty-one years after that terrible night we continue to hear incitement against soldiers, journalist judges, police — anyone who doesn’t think like those spreading the hate,” Herzog said. “We will petition the attorney general, the relevant courts and the Supreme Court to stop this disease.”Stuart Winer contributed to this report.

Iran to ink $6 billion gas deal with France’s Total-In first major signing in Western company since nuclear deal, Tehran to develop offshore field with consortium that includes China-By AFP November 7, 2016, 5:51 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

TEHRAN — Iran will sign a deal with France’s Total on Tuesday for the development of gas production at a major offshore field in the Gulf, the Iranian oil ministry said. The Heads of Agreement (HOA) for the development of Phase 11 of the important South Pars field is worth $6 billion, a ministry spokesman told AFP.The accord must be finalized within six months, the spokesman added. The agreement involves a consortium led by Total, which includes the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Iran’s Petropars. The deal will be the first of its kind between Iran and a Western petroleum company since a nuclear deal with world powers took effect in January, lifting some international sanctions. It also marks the return of Total to Iran, years after it left the Islamic republic in 2012 when France took part in European Union sanctions, including an oil embargo.Total reached a general agreement in 2004 with Iran for the development of Phase 11 and a gas plant. But it was never finalized. In June 2009 Tehran signed a nearly $5-billion agreement with CNPC for the development of that phase. That contract was also cancelled in early 2013, because the Chinese side didn’t honor its commitments. The offshore South Pars field, shared by Iran and Qatar in the Gulf, contains some 14,000 billion cubic meters of gas — 8 percent of the world’s known reserves.

Luxembourg FM comapres Turkey crackdown to Nazi Germany-Ankara’s EU affairs minister counters that Hitler’s army would be ‘like schoolchildren’ compard to alleged coup plotters-By Geir Moulson November 7, 2016, 5:34 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

BERLIN, Germany (AP) — Luxembourg’s foreign minister accused Turkish authorities on Monday of using methods reminiscent of those employed by Nazis in a crackdown following July’s coup attempt. In a German radio interview, Jean Asselborn suggested that Turkey’s strong economic ties with the European Union could be used to exert pressure on Ankara over human rights issues.Turkey brushed off the accusation, arguing that the movement led by a US-based cleric whom the government accuses of masterminding the failed coup is worse than the Nazis. It insisted it would not be deterred from its efforts to go after cleric Fethullah Gulen’s network of followers.Opposition parties in Turkey and human rights groups accuse the government of clamping down on all critics, not just alleged coup plotters.Asselborn told Germany’s Deutschlandfunk radio that people who’ve been fired have their names published, have their passports destroyed, have no chance of finding another job and no income, and risk hunger.“These are methods, one must say this bluntly, that were used during Nazi rule,” said Asselborn, who has a record of making outspoken comments. “And there has been a really, really bad evolution in Turkey since July that we as the European Union cannot simply accept.”Turkey’s EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik retorted that “the issue does not resemble Nazi-era practices, rather the struggle against the Nazis after they were chased from power.”“Compared to the (Gulen movement) Nazis would resemble apprentices. They would appear like schoolchildren next to the (Gulen movement),” he said.“No one should think that we would step back from our struggle against an organization that used warplanes, tanks, battleships and helicopters against its own people.”Asselborn said that Turkey’s strong economic ties with the EU are “absolutely a means of pressure.”“At a certain moment we will not be able to get around using this means of pressure to counteract the unspeakable state of human rights,” he added.Germany, the EU’s most populous country, sounded unenthusiastic about that idea.“The German government is not participating now in a debate about sanctions,” said Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert. He said Europe needs to make clear to Turkey “what effects the repression of the press and the repression of the opposition have on relations … and for that it is important to keep open channels of communication.”

Islamic State threatens US election day ‘slaughter’-As Iraqi forces battle jihadist group in Mosul, its propaganda arm denounces Muslim Americans who vote as ‘apostates’-By Times of Israel staff November 6, 2016, 5:36 am

The Islamic State on Friday threatened a “slaughter” and “dreadful calamity” against the United States during Tuesday’s elections in an anti-democratic screed published by the group’s propaganda arm.The English-language text published by the Al Hayat media center entitled “The Murtadd [apostate] vote” rails against American democracy and denounces American Muslims who take part in the electoral process.Friday’s publication came as the Islamic State battled with Iraqi and Kurdish forces for control of Mosul, as troops pushed into the city following a two-weeks offensive. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s second largest city two years ago and separate forces of Iraqi regulars, Kurdish fighters and Shiite militias launched a campaign last month to retake the stronghold.Iraqi special forces threw themselves back into battle Saturday after a first foray into Mosul was blunted by stiffer than expected resistance from jihadists defending the birthplace of their “caliphate.”Rita Katz, head of the SITE intelligence group that published the document, said that the incitement to attacks on Election Day were “an attempt to disrupt the election process and gain media attention.”1)Breaking: #ISIS special Hayat media doc calls for attacks on voters on #ElectionDay demands Muslims not participate in Democratic process http://pic.twitter.com/w2UKmsQIxo— Rita Katz (@Rita_Katz) November 5, 2016-“We denounce your democratic kufr [disbelief in Islam],” the jihadist group said Friday as counter-terrorism forces made their first real push into the streets of Mosul. “Indeed, we have come to slaughter you and smash your ballot boxes.”Muslims who participate in democracy “while claiming to support ‘Islam'” are apostates, the group said, “whose blood is obligatory to spill unless he repents.”“The blood of Crusader voters is even more deserving of being spilled than the blood of Crusader combatants,” the organization added, with particular emphasis on violence against women who go to the ballot in Tuesday’s much-anticipated presidential election.Concerning the two presidential candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, the Islamic State said that the only differences between the two in terms of their policies vis-a-vis Muslims are that “Clinton is more skilled in ‘political correctness,’ giving her leverage in the sorcery of hypocrisy… and that Trump is impulsive and unpredictable.”“May Allah make this year’s US presidential election a dreadful calamity like no other to have struck America throughout its pathetic history,” the article said in closing. The essay was released the same day the FBI and New York Police Department said they are assessing the credibility of information they received of a possible al-Qaeda terror plot against the US on the eve of Election Day.Officials said counterterrorism investigators are reviewing the information that mentioned New York, Texas and Virginia as potential target sites. It wasn’t immediately clear how the intelligence came to investigators’ attention. An NYPD spokesman said in a statement that the information “lacks specificity.”The FBI said it was working closely with law enforcement agencies and sharing intelligence reports.AP contributed to this report.
