Paris rail hub evacuated in terror-linked police manhunt – report-Armed with assault rifles and shields, police clear Gare du Nord station late Monday to search train for three individuals-By AP and AFP May 9, 2017, 2:55 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Police poured into Paris’s Gare du Nord station late Monday, evacuating passengers from platforms and sealing off the area in a new security scare to hit the French capital.Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert told The Associated Press that the operation was aimed at “removing doubt” but would not say what prompted it or whether there had been any injuries or arrests. A station employee said the operation focused on a train from Valenciennes in northern France.Sources at the station told news agencies that officials at France’s national railway company SNCF had alerted police to the presence of three wanted individuals on the train, with some initial reports saying the three were wanted in a terror investigation. The busy station is the terminus of a large suburban and national rail network as well as Eurostar trains from London.France is under a state of emergency imposed after a series of Islamic extremist attacks. The operation came the day after a tense and closely watched presidential election that was won by independent Emmanuel Macron. He has said one of his top priorities will be ensuring France’s security.Police started pouring into the station just after 11 p.m. and asked where the train from Valenciennes was, according to a station employee, who was not authorized to be publicly named. Station staff directed officers to platform 10, where they were quickly joined by more and more police. Within minutes, authorities began evacuating the entire station, the employee said. The operation ended at 1:30 a.m. local time, police said in a tweet as officers on the outskirts of the cordon around the station began to pack up and the cordon was gradually pared back. Some witnesses spoke of panic at the sight of officers armed with assault rifles and shields.Benjamin, 29, disembarked from his train from Lille at 11:15 p.m. to find at the end of the quay “police officers in uniform (who) asked us to get out quickly from the station.” They were armed and equipped with shields, he said.“When we met the police force, the people around us began to panic, scream and run to the exits and the subway,” he added.Claire Sinead, 19, was leaving the subway when she saw the “police everywhere” on the station platform.“They told us to run, to evacuate the area,” she said, describing police forces with “helmets and all their equipment.” Living nearby, she went home escorted by a policeman.Olivier Queneau was waiting for his train for Orry-la-Ville when he saw the police enter the station. “They told us to evacuate. On leaving, security agents told us that a man was armed, and we went out calmly,” he said.Dave James Phillips, a 39-year-old technology consultant from Britain, said he was getting off the last train in from London when he saw officers flooding the station.“There were police immediately, and a chap with his hand on his gun,” Phillips told AP. “As we were walking down the platform, one came down and said, ‘Rapide, rapide. Out, out.’”Phillips said police kept pouring into the station as passengers were hustled out and police buses and unmarked cars were “driving quite dramatically up the road.”Phillips said he had since left the area.“Hopefully nothing happened,” he said.A Eurostar spokeswoman said the incident did not appear to have any relation to its trains and did not appear to affect its passengers. The operation began after the last Eurostar arrivals and departures late Monday.Throughout the operation, access to the rail station and adjacent subway platforms was sealed off, according to an AFP reporter.

'Each day that Jerusalem is under occupation is an insult to us'-Erdogan lashes ‘racist’ Israel, calls for Muslims to flood Temple Mount-Turkish president warns against moving US embassy to Jerusalem; slams mosque-muffling bill; Israel rejects his ‘baseless slander’-By Times of Israel staff and AFP May 8, 2017, 9:28 pm

ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday urged Muslims to throng to the Temple Mount in a show of solidarity with Palestinians as he issued a string of challenges to Israel, which he called “racist and discriminatory.”“We, as Muslims, should be visiting Al-Quds more often,” he said, referring to Jerusalem by its Arabic name.“Each day that Jerusalem is under occupation is an insult to us,” he added, at the opening ceremony of the International Forum on al-Quds Waqf in Istanbul, Turkey’s Hurriyet news reported.Erdogan said increased Muslim visits to the Jerusalem holy site “would be the greatest support to our brothers there.”“Both in terms of our religion and historical responsibility, Al-Quds and the fight of our Palestinian brothers for rights and justice is of great importance to us. We will keep making efforts for Quds to turn into a city of peace,” Erdogan said.In the blistering speech, which also criticized Israeli legislation and US plans to move their embassy to Jerusalem, Erdogan also called Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians “racist and discriminatory” and said the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip “has no place in humanity.”Israel blockades the Strip in an attempt to keep weapons reaching the Strip’s Hamas terrorist rulers.Israel reacted quickly and angrily to Erdogan ‘s comments, calling them “baseless slander.”“Anyone who systemically violates human rights in their own country, should not preach about morality to the only democracy in the region,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.“Israel strictly adheres to protecting full freedom of worship for Jews, Muslims and Christians — and will continue to do so despite this baseless slander,” the statement said.Erdogan also warned Israel against the planned Muezzin Bill meant to limit the volume on Muslim calls to prayer, saying he would not allow mosque loudspeakers to be silenced.“The fact that such an issue is even coming to the agenda is shameful,” he said. “The fact that those who talk about freedom of thought and faith at every opportunity actually approve this step by remaining silent is noteworthy. Inshallah, we will not allow the silencing of prayers from the heavens of Jerusalem,” Erdogan said.Israel is pushing a bill that would ban religious institutions from using loudspeakers at certain hours, a move seen as targeting Muslim mosques who issue a pre-dawn call to prayer.Critics say the bill is anti-Muslim, but proponents say it is about noise control and quality of life for people who live near mosques. But Erdogan issued a challenge to Israel, saying that to move against the mosques would be a strike against freedom of religion.“Why are you afraid of the freedom of faith if you believe in your faith? I am now reminding Israeli administrators: If you believe in your faith, then why are you afraid of the sound of our prayers?” he said.Erdogan also spoke about the debates over the possibility of moving the US embassy In Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying they are “extremely wrong” and should be dropped.US President Donald Trump had promised during his campaign to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, whose status is one of the thorniest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Erdogan said everyone should be careful on issues that concerned the status of Jerusalem, warning that even “relocating a stone” in the city could have serious implications.“The debates over the possibility of US moving its Israel embassy to Jerusalem are extremely wrong and should certainly drop from the agenda,” the Turkish president said.

Coexistence group calls for Jerusalem Day march to avoid Muslim Quarter-Israeli revelers will be allowed to go through Arab neighborhood, but under strict time limits out of respect for Ramadan-By Judah Ari Gross May 8, 2017, 10:09 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

For the third year in a row, a Jerusalem-based coexistence group on Sunday called to keep the annual Jerusalem Day parade out of the Old City’s Muslim Quarter .Beginning at sundown on May 23, Israel will commemorate the capture of East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War. As part of the Jerusalem Day celebrations each year, hundreds of Jewish Israelis parade through the Old City, including the Muslim Quarter. This segment of the so-called “flags dance” march has frequently been a source of conflict and friction, mostly at the level of participants verbally disparaging residents and Muslims in general, but occasionally rising to physical violence. On Sunday, the left-wing Ir Amim organization again attempted to prevent the parade from passing through the quarter, sending letters to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Jerusalem Police Chief Yoram Halevi and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblitt. This is Ir Amim’s third attempt to block the parade through the Muslim Quarter. In 2015 and 2016, the group has asked the High Court of Justice to prevent revelers from entering the Muslim Quarter. These efforts have not been successful. The organization has yet to file a formal request with the High Court of Justice for the 2017 march. The Damascus Gate entrance to the Muslim Quarter has been the site of many attacks by Palestinians and East Jerusalem residents against Israeli civilians and security personnel. Most recently, on Sunday, police officers shot dead a Palestinian teenage girl who attempted to stab them.In 2015, the court refused Ir Amim’s request, but instructed police to have “zero tolerance” for violence or offensive language by participants. In its letters, Ir Amim noted that despite the court order, in 2015 there were still instances of revelers shouting racist slogans at Muslim Quarter residents “and these were done without police officers getting involved almost at all.”Last year, when Jerusalem Day coincided with the first day of Ramadan, the High Court ordered the paraders to leave to the Muslim Quarter by 7:30 p.m.The organization noted that 2016’s march saw fewer clashes between participants and residents, and said that this was because the parade was limited in the amount of time it could spend in the Muslim Quarter.“Otherwise, there would have been more incidents of verbal and physical violence,” Ir Amim said in its letter. The organization also noted that the parade’s route through the Muslim Quarter forces local business owners to close their shops and restricts the movement of residents.Barkat’s office said the parade was not a Jerusalem Municipality event and deferred questions to the police, which ultimately approves the route.A police spokesperson would not comment on the issue directly, saying only, “Should a letter arrive, the response will be sent from the recipient to the applicant.”

Archbishop of Canterbury says Mideast peace talks may need to include Hamas-Justin Welby, in the Holy Land, stresses timing of such talks must be right to bring rewards, because otherwise there is the risk of ‘a complete meltdown’-By Stuart Winer and Times of Israel staff May 8, 2017, 9:53 pm

The Archbishop of Canterbury said Monday that in order for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to reach a deal there may need to be a seat at the table for the Hamas terrorist group, but cautioned the timing must be right or disaster could ensue.Justin Welby, on a 10-day tour of the holy land, spoke to the British Guardian newspaper and Christian Today, after having visited the Gaza Strip last week.“The archbishop said the time may come when parties seeking a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict needed to include Hamas in talks,” the Guardian reported, and then quoted Welby saying: “In any place where there’s serious conflict, there’s a point where you need to talk to everyone, but it has got to be the point where you can make some progress.”Including extremists in talks — both Palestinian and Israeli — should be kept as an option, Welby reportedly suggested, apparently referring to hard-line settler groups on the Israeli side. When in Gaza, Welby, the head of the church in England, did not meet with Hamas members in keeping in line with British government policy. Hamas is recognized as a terror group by Israel, the US and the EU. Israel has repeatedly said it will not negotiate with Hamas, which calls for Israel’s destruction, until it renounces violence and recognizes Israel.“There’s a moment, which I’m not saying is now, when it is possible for it to bring rewards. But the moment is not any moment — you can do it at exactly the wrong time and cause a complete meltdown and undermine all the resistance to extremism.”That can then lead to a situation in which “the people in the middle become more disempowered, and you end up privileging those who cause the most difficulty, you reward bad behavior by attention,” Welby warned.Archbishop of Canterbury @JustinWelby visited #Gaza today. Praying for peace and justice for all. http://pic.twitter.com/ruoa1AFEAP— Justin Welby ن (@JustinWelby) May 8, 2017-“You cannot come and hear the testimonies I heard, you cannot hear from the people who live here, without your heart becoming heavier and heavier, and more and more burdened, with that sense of people whose history has led them to a place where all they have known is disintegrating,” Welby said. “As always in these times, it is the weak, the poor who are shoved to the side. The emotional reaction is one of profound grief and sorrow, and of prayer that there will be justice and security for all.”Welby visited Jerusalem last Wednesday, and was joined by UK Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis for prayers at the Western Wall.In what Mirvis described as “a unique moment in history,” the two religious leaders toured the Old City of Jerusalem and visited Yad Vashem — the World Holocaust Remembrance Center.Earlier on Wednesday, he was in Jordan where he led prayers at the Bethany Beyond the Jordan archaeological site, believed to be the place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus of Nazareth. Welby is also scheduled to visit Egypt during his tour of the region. His last visit to Israel was in 2013, shortly before he was enthroned as archbishop.Agencies contributed to this report.

UK government said to cancel Prince Charles’ visit to Israel-Foreign Office reportedly puts kibosh on trip planned for fall of 2017 out of fears it would anger Arab allies-By Tamar Pileggi and Raoul Wootliff May 7, 2017, 4:38 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

A potentially historic visit to Israel by a senior member of the British royal family scheduled for later this year has reportedly been canceled by the country’s Foreign Office over fears it would anger the UK’s Arab allies. The Sun tabloid reported Sunday that Prince Charles will not visit Israel in the fall of 2017 for a trip that was planned to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.Though never officially confirmed by London or Jerusalem, a senior British Jewish community leader told The Times of Israel last November that plans were underway for a member of the royal family to visit Israel in the first-ever official visit. In March, in a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, President Reuven Rivlin publicly extended an invitation to Prince Charles to visit Israel during the centennial year of the 1917 signing of the Balfour Declaration. But according to The Sun, the Royal Visits Committee, the branch of the Foreign Office that coordinates trips on behalf of the royal family, nixed the visit in an apparent effort to “to avoid upsetting Arab nations in the region who regularly host UK Royals.”The report said Rivlin’s invitation never reached the office of Prince Charles. The UK Foreign Office denied a visit had ever been planned, in a statement to The Times of Israel.“Her Majesty’s Government makes decisions on Royal Visits based on recommendations from the Royal Visits Committee, taking into account advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The Committee never proposed a royal visit to Israel for 2017. Plans for 2018 will be announced in due course,” a spokesperson said. While royals have visited Israel in the past, no representative of the British monarchy has ever come to the country on an official “royal tour.”Prince Charles’s attendance at Shimon Peres’s funeral last year and the funeral of slain prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1994 did not include diplomatic meetings and are not considered official royal visits. Nor was a brief 1994 visit by his father, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, to attend a ceremony commemorating his mother, Alice of Battenberg, who is buried on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives.Despite numerous invitations over the years, no UK government has approved such a visit to Israel since the end of the British Mandate and the establishment of the state in 1948.Israeli officials have bristled at royals’ unwillingness to come to the Jewish state, while they appear to have no qualms about visiting authoritarian states like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Hasidic Jews serenade pope at the Vatican-Delegation led by Edgar Gluck, chief rabbi of Galicia, meets pontiff in Rome to talk about protecting Jewish cemeteries in Europe and combating child sex abuse-By JTA May 9, 2017, 12:03 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

ROME – Pope Francis swayed along as a delegation of Hasidic Jews sang and danced for him at an audience at the Vatican. The meeting also had a serious side, including discussions on the protection of Jewish cemeteries in Europe and combating child sex abuse. The pontiff held a 45-minute audience at the Vatican on Monday with the group, which was led by Rabbi Edgar Gluck.A video on the Yeshiva World News website and also posted to YouTube shows the pope swaying to the music as members of the delegation dance and serenade him with the song “Long years shall satiate him.”Yeshiva World News quoted Gluck’s son Zvi, who was part of the delegation, as saying the pontiff pledged to work toward enacting “stronger rules against destroying Jewish cemeteries to build roads or homes.”Zvi Gluck, the founder and director of Amudim, an organization dedicated to helping Jewish victims of abuse and addiction, also tweeted that the pontiff had pledged “zero tolerance” for the sexual abuse of children and said “We need to keep kids safe.”“Zero tolerance" Said Pope Francis, “We need to keep kids safe" to myself, my father and members of delegation, at meeting in the Vatican http://pic.twitter.com/RWHlFIv7ob— Zvi Gluck (@zgluck) May 8, 2017-Born in Germany, Edgar Gluck, 80, divides his time between Brooklyn and Poland, where he holds the title of chief rabbi of Galicia. In the United States, where he has long been politically active, he was a co-founder of Hatzolah, one of the largest volunteer ambulance corps. He has been involved in the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Europe for decades and long served as a member of the US Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad.Gluck and Pope Francis met and discussed the plight of Jewish cemeteries last year when the pontiff visited Krakow for Catholic World Youth Day and, according to Yeshiva World News, the pope invited Gluck to continue the discussion at the Vatican.

Trump administration insists travel ban not anti-Muslim-In latest court fight, ACLU notes that controversial travel freeze from six Muslim nations follows explicit campaign promise to stop Muslims entering US-By Sébastien BLANC May 9, 2017, 4:32 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Did Donald Trump’s contested travel ban deliberately single out Muslims? The US administration fiercely denied it during an appeals court hearing Monday — despite the president’s campaign call for a blanket Muslim ban.The hearing came as Trump seeks to bounce back from a series of stinging judicial defeats over his controversial effort to bar travelers from half a dozen mainly Muslim countries. The question of intention is key since the US Constitution forbids religious discrimination. Trump’s detractors say it is beyond doubt that Muslims were the ban’s intended target, but the administration says it is motivated strictly by national security concerns, an area where US presidents have wide powers.Trump “never intended for that to discriminate on the basis of any particular religion,” Jeffrey Wall, the US acting solicitor general, told judges of the Fourth US Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond during an intensely argued afternoon hearing.“He made clear he was not talking about Muslims all over the world,” said Wall. “That’s why it’s not a Muslim ban.”But a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, Omar Jadwat, whose side is supported by several Democratic-led states, argued that Trump the candidate made clear he wanted to ban all Muslims for a time while studying enhanced immigration vetting.A lower judge’s ruling dealt Trump a blow by freezing his second attempt to close US borders to citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.Given the public importance of the case, the full appeals court in Richmond heard the arguments — bypassing the usual initial three-judge panel — for the first time in a quarter-century.Thirteen of the court’s 15 active judges took part. Two recused themselves over potential conflicts of interest, including the conservative J. Harvie Wilkinson, Wall’s father-in-law.The court, once considered the most conservative appeals court in the country, now has nine judges named by Democratic presidents including Barack Obama, according to Carl Tobias of the University of Richmond School of Law.-Outcome unclear-The judges aggressively questioned both Wall and Jadwat, making it unclear which way they might be leaning. They pressed Wall over whether Trump had acted in “bad faith,” disguising an order targeting Muslims as one intended to prevent terrorism. They said Trump’s comment, while signing his second order, that “you know what I mean” by the order was a “wink and a nod” to let supporters know he was really aiming at Muslims.Judge Barbara Keenan suggested that Trump’s country-based order was bound to be sweeping and indiscriminate. “You’re talking about 82 million people aren’t you? It seems to me there has to be some linkage to show that there is a detrimental interest to the United States posed by 82 million people.”The judges also pressed Jadwat over whether an identical order issued by a president who had not made remarks against Muslims might be acceptable — and whether a president should not be granted some deference on security matters.-First attempt blocked-The federal court judge in Maryland issued a nationwide block on the ban’s core provision concerning travel from the short list of countries, saying the order raised the prospect of religious bias against Muslims. That decision came just after a broader one issued in Hawaii that halted both the travel ban and a 120-day suspension of the US refugee admissions program. The White House is fighting that ruling in the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals, based in San Francisco. The scope of Trump’s revamped ban, signed in early March, was reduced from his original January effort, which blocked travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq, as well as all refugees. The first decree — which prompted mass protests and sowed chaos at US airports — was blocked on grounds it violated the ban on religious discrimination, a ruling upheld on appeal. The modified version removed Iraq from the ban, but ran into the same objections.Although the travel rule does not explicitly mention Muslims, the Maryland judge, Theodore Chuang, accepted arguments that Trump’s history of anti-Muslim rhetoric presented “a convincing case” that it amounted to “the realization of the long-envisioned Muslim ban.”Trump has vowed to fight the latest “flawed” ruling all the way to the Supreme Court. The Justice Department has the backing in Richmond of around a dozen Republican-led states.A ruling is expected to take anywhere from one to six months.
