He was living in Paterson, N.J., based on Pennsylvania traffic court records from 2012 and 2015, and other documents, cited by several media outlets.Saipov lived in Paterson — a city of some 147,000 people, about 25 kilometres northwest of the site of the attack — with his wife and three children, according to an unnamed law enforcement official who spoke to ABC News.ABC also reported Saipov left a note at the scene "saying he had carried out the attack on behalf of the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS." NEW YORK — A man in a rented pickup truck mowed down pedestrians and cyclists along a busy bike path near the World Trade Center memorial on Tuesday, killing at least eight and seriously injuring 11 in what the mayor called "a particularly cowardly act of terror."The driver was shot in the abdomen by police after jumping out of the truck with what turned out to be a fake gun in each hand and shouting what witnesses said was "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great," authorities said. The man underwent surgery and was in critical condition but was expected to survive.Officials who weren't authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity identified the attacker as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov and said he is from Uzbekistan and came to the U.S. legally in 2010. The officials said Saipov has a Florida driver's license and may have been staying in New Jersey, and a family friend described roots he had in Ohio, where he lived years ago and was a commercial truck driver.The driver in Tuesday's attack barrelled along the bike path in a rented Home Depot truck for the equivalent of about 14 blocks, or around eight-tenths of a mile, before slamming into a small yellow school bus. The mayhem and the burst of police gunfire set off panic in the neighbourhood and left the pavement strewn with mangled bicycles and bodies that were soon covered with sheets."I saw a lot of blood over there. Court records related to trucking-related infractions list Saipov with addresses in Paterson and the Cleveland suburbs.The family friend with whom Saipov stayed in Ohio, Dilnoza Abdusamatova, told The Cincinnati Enquirer Saipov was "really calm" and worked hard."He always used to work," Abdusamatova said. "He wouldn't go to parties or anything. He only used to come home and rest and leave and go back to work."Police said Saipov rented the truck at about 2 p.m. in New Jersey, entering the bike path about an hour later on West Street a few blocks from the new World Trade Center, the site of the deadliest terror attack in U.S. history. The man who killed at least eight people by driving a truck down a busy bicycle path in New York City on Tuesday has been identified by news organizations in the U.S. and elsewhere as Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old commercial truck driver originally from Uzbekistan.Saipov emigrated to the U.S. in 2010 and later became a permanent legal resident. He was living in Paterson, N.J., based on Pennsylvania traffic court records from 2012 and 2015, and other documents, cited by several media outlets.Saipov lived in Paterson — a city of some 147,000 people, about 25 kilometres northwest of the site of the attack — with his wife and three children, according to an unnamed law enforcement official who spoke to ABC News.ABC also reported Saipov left a note at the scene "saying he had carried out the attack on behalf of the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS." CBS News had a similar report about a note.Saipov also has ties to Ohio, worked there as a commercial truck driver and registered two businesses, both of which are still active.He registered Sayf Motors in 2011 and Bright Auto in 2013. Bright Auto is also registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation, with one truck and one driver, according to several media reports.A BuzzFeed News reporter visited an apartment complex in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, that matched the address for Bright Auto. Neighbours "said they recognized Saipov and saw him frequently," according to BuzzFeed.Meanwhile, the Washington Post interviewed a Cincinnati woman, Dilnoza Abdusamatova, who said Saipov stayed with her family when he first arrived in the U.S., because their fathers were friends. She said he then moved to Florida.Saipov "stopped talking to us when he got married," Abdusamatova told the Post.The Post and other outlets report he lived in Tampa, Fla.Records also show traffic offences for Saipov in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Missouri, according to multiple news outlets.
