Defense minister unmoved by threats of violence over Jerusalem recognition-Liberman says Israel will 'know how to deal with the ramifications' of US embassy relocation; Lapid says move should have been made '70 years ago'-By Marissa Newman-DEC 4,17-TOI

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid on Monday urged US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate the embassy from Tel Aviv.Speaking at the weekly Yisrael Beytenu faction meeting, the defense minister brushed off the threats of violence by Palestinians and the wider Arab world, saying Israel will “know how to deal with all the ramifications” of any US recognition.Trump faces a key decision this week on whether to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, prompting a flood of warnings from the Arab world that it could ignite tensions and sink hopes for peace.Liberman said he “completely supports” Jerusalem recognition, hailing it as the “right step” and a measure that would be “very, very important to all Jewish people.”The Palestinians, Jordan, and the Arab League have all objected to the move, with the Hamas terrorist group threatening a renewed “intifada” should it go ahead.“We’ll know how to deal with all the ramifications” and those who raise tensions, Liberman added. Also joining the chorus of support on Monday was Lapid, who told his opposition Yesh Atid faction meeting the US should have recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “70 years ago,” or at the very least “the day after ’67,” referring to the 1967 Six Day War when Israel reclaimed the whole city.Trump was expected to make an announcement by Wednesday. His son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner on Sunday said the US president remained undecided on the issue.AFP contributed to this report.

Turkey warns of ‘catastrophe’ if US recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital-Deputy PM says action would would 'completely destroy' the peace process, cause new conflicts-By AFP and TOI staff-DEC 4,17

A senior Turkish government official on Monday warned of a “major catastrophe” if the United States recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital despite a flood of warnings from the Arab world.“If the (current) status of Jerusalem is changed and another step is taken … that would be a major catastrophe,” Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said during a televised press conference. “It would completely destroy the fragile peace process in the region, and lead to new conflicts, new disputes and new unrest.”The status of Jerusalem is one of the most contentious issues of the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.US President Donald Trump faces a key decision this week on whether to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, potentially reversing years of United States policy and drawing a furious response from the Palestinian leadership and the Arab world. Most of the international community, including the US as well as Turkey, does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, insisting the issue can only be resolved through final status negotiations.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a champion of the Palestinian cause, often criticizes Israel over its actions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, despite a 2016 reconciliation deal after years of severed ties following Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound ship.Bozdag, also government spokesman, on Monday said a US step to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would benefit “neither Israel … nor the region.”“It would not benefit anything. Rather than open new doors, it would drag the region into a new disaster.”On Sunday the Arab League issued as similar warning, saying recognition would boost fanaticism and violence, and not serve the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.Trump’s son-in-law and Middle East peace envoy Jared Kushner told the Saban Forum on Sunday the president is close to a decision on whether to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital but has yet to make up his mind.“It is unfortunate that some are insisting on carrying out this step without any regard to the dangers it carries to the stability of the Middle East and the whole world,” Ahmed Abul Gheit, head of the Arab League, told reporters in Cairo on Sunday.“Nothing justifies this act… it will not serve peace or stability, instead it will nourish fanaticism and violence,” Abul Gheit said.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas echoed the sentiment, warning the White House earlier on Sunday that the move would jeopardize the administration’s peace efforts in the Mideast. As of Sunday, Trump had not signed a waiver delaying the move of the US embassy to Jerusalem by another six months, and he has only until Monday to do so. A stream of media reports in recent days have indicated that the president intends to declare this week that he considers Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital, and possibly announce the embassy move.A 1995 law requires the relocation of the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, but provides the president with the prerogative to postpone the move every six months on national security grounds. Each of Trump’s three immediate predecessors — Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama — repeatedly exercised that right. The Israeli government has long sought for the US to relocate its embassy and for the international community to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Muslim nations call for summit if Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israeli capital-The 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation seeking to amplify concern over the possible move of American embassy-By Tamar Pileggi-DEC 4,17-TOI

5:42 pm-Muslim nations call for summit if Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israeli capital-The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation calls for a summit of Muslim nations if the United States takes the controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.US President Donald Trump faces a key decision this week over Jerusalem’s status, potentially reversing years of US policy and prompting a furious response from the Palestinians and the Arab world. The 57-member OIC is seeking to amplify concern over the possible move in an emergency meeting later today in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah.“If the United States takes the step of recognising Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel, we unanimously recommend holding a meeting at the level of council of foreign ministers followed by an Islamic summit as soon as possible,” the pan-Islamic body says in a statement. The OIC also warns that recognizing Jerusalem or establishing any diplomatic mission in the disputed city would be seen as a “blatant attack on the Arab and Islamic nations.”— AFP 4:25 pm-Abbas’s Fatah party calls for mass mobilization if Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital-The Palestinian Authority’s dominant party, Fatah, calls for mass mobilization of Palestinians if US President Donald Trump officially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, or moves its embassy there. It has been widely reported that Trump will announce the embassy move, or perhaps simply declare that the US recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, on Wednesday. The status of Jerusalem is one of the most contentious issues of the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the suggestion that Trump could reverse years of US policy has prompted a furious bout of lobbying from the Palestinian leadership.— Dov Lieber. 2:24 pm-Lapid says US should have recognized Jerusalem as Israeli capital 70 years ago-Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid says the US should have recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital “70 years ago” or at the very least, “the day after ’67.”At the weekly Yesh Atid meeting, Lapid expresses hope the US will now declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate its embassy.Lapid speaks ahead of US President Donald Trump’s deadline to sign a six-month waiver on moving the embassy, with an announcement expected tomorrow. He also addresses the so-called police recommendations bill. He says Netanyahu’s statement yesterday that the bill will be revised to exclude the cases against him was “an admission of guilt” as the prime minister has insisted throughout he is not involved in the legislation.— Marissa Newman.

EU president cancels Israel trip for ‘critical’ Brexit talks-Donald Tusk had been scheduled to meet with Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Palestinian Authority PM in Ramallah-By AFP-DEC 4,17

BRUSSELS — European Council President Donald Tusk has canceled a trip to Israel and the West Bank this week because talks on a Brexit deal are in a “critical” phase, his spokesman said Monday.“Due to a critical moment in the Brexit talks and due to consultations on draft guidelines for the second phase,” the trip from Tuesday to Wednesday has been called off, Tusk’s spokesman Preben Aamann told AFP.Tusk had been due to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Tuesday night, and Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in Ramallah on Wednesday, according to his official schedule published last week.Tusk is meeting British Prime Minister Theresa May in Brussels on Monday as May tries to seal a divorce agreement that would allow Brexit negotiations to move on to the second phase, dealing with trade and transition talks. The European Commission is set to decide whether Britain has made enough progress on Wednesday, and, if so, ambassadors from the remaining EU 27 countries will meet the same day to draw up guidelines for the next stage.Former Polish premier Tusk then chairs an EU summit on December 15 where leaders would sign off any deal. His diary is now clear until Friday when he is scheduled to travel to Hungary.
