You loved me always, unconditionally, even more than I loved myself,” she said. “My Yossi, look how many people came just for you. You are my light and my heart.”Chief Superintendent Meir Namir, Kirma’s commander in the elite tactical response unit Yasam in the Jerusalem Police, said Sunday’s attack “will be seared in the hearts of the policemen of the unit. Jerusalem is our capital and we will continue to develop it and build it.”Kirma was killed in the shootout while trying to charge the gunman, police said. “He fearlessly pursued the terrorist in order to neutralize him and prevent further harm to innocent bystanders,” the police statement said.He was a resident of the Jerusalem suburb Mevasseret Zion and is survived by his wife of five months, parents and two brothers. Terrorist opens fire in Jerusalem, killing two-Police officer and bystander succumb to injuries after attack near capital’s Ammunition Hill, five others injured; assailant killed in shootout with cops-By Judah Ari Gross October 9, 2016, 10:23 am-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

Two people were killed and five more were injured in a shooting attack near Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem Sunday morning, police and emergency medical officials said.Police described the incident, which saw an East Jerusalem gunman open fire at pedestrians and police over a several hundred meter swath of the capital, as a terror attack. One woman, approximately 60 years old, was shot in the upper body and critically wounded in the attack, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.A police officer, approximately 30 years old, was also critically wounded in a shootout with the assailant, police said. Both were later declared dead, after being rushed to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, a spokesperson said.Three other victims, including a 68-year-old man, were moderately wounded, while another two were lightly injured in the attack, according to MDA.The attacker was shot and killed. He was identified as a 39-year-old resident of Silwan, in East Jerusalem, police said.He possessed an Israeli identification card, according to Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan.“There were no prior warnings ahead of a focused attack like this,” Erdan said. The attack began as the assailant drove by police headquarters on Haim Bar-Lev Street, a main artery also served by the city’s light rail, and opened fire at a group of people, hitting one woman, police said.He sped off toward Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau Street and shot a woman who was in her car, critically wounding her.He continued toward the Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. Police officers on motorcycles from the city’s Special Patrol Unit saw the shooting and gave chase, police said. The assailant then opened fire at the officers, who shot and “neutralized him,” police said.During the shootout, one officer was critically wounded, while a second was lightly to moderately injured, police said.A video that was released on social media (below) appeared to show the shootout between police officers and the terrorist. The second injured officer, 28, was taken to the capital’s Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, the hospital said. One of the moderately wounded victims, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus. The three other victims were taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center, according to MDA.Two of the victims taken to Shaare Zedek were not injured by gunfire, but sustained light injuries when the terrorist’s vehicle collided with their car, MDA said.Three people were also treated on the scene and later brought to the hospital after they suffered anxiety attacks, MDA said.Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who had been on a tour of the West Bank at the time of the shooting, rushed back to the capital to visit the scene of the attack, as did Erdan and Israel Police Chief Roni Alsheich. The Hamas terrorist organization praised the shooting, calling it “heroic”, “brave” and a “natural response to the occupation,” Army Radio reported. At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent well-wishes to the Israelis injured in the shooting attack. The prime minister praised the security forces involved, who he said acted “very quickly and with determination” and “hunted down the terrorist and killed him.”After the attack, police asked for and received a gag order on the details of the investigation of the shooting, a spokesperson said.Hadassah opened a dedicated hotline for information about the victims. People in Israel can dial 1255121.The attack broke a spell of calm in the capital that followed a months-long wave of violence last autumn and winter that included several attacks near Ammunition Hill.Officials had feared a return to stabbing, shooting and car-ramming attacks with the onset of the fall holiday season, when religious tensions often spike.October 2015 marked the start of several months of near-daily attacks during which at least 34 Israelis and over 200 Palestinians were killed in a spate of attacks. Most of the Palestinians killed were attackers or involved in clashes with troops.

Government to shun Arab party over Peres funeral snub-Move against 13-strong faction that boycotted former president’s funeral initiated by Defense Minister Liberman and backed by PM-By JTA October 9, 2016, 9:00 pm-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The governing coalition in Israel led by the Likud Party will shun the parliamentary activities of the Joint Arab List over its decision to not send any representatives to the funeral of former President Shimon Peres. The boycott of the 13-member coalition of Arab parties, the fourth largest delegation in the Knesset, was initiated by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, head of the Yisrael Beytenu Party, and supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Joint Arab List head Ayman Odeh explained at the time of the funeral two weeks ago that the issue was “complicated.”“The memory of Peres in the Arab public is different from the narrative discussed in recent years,” he tweeted. His party also did not issue a statement following Peres’s death nor send representatives to pay respects at Peres’s coffin lying in state in front of the Knesset the day before the funeral.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and a delegation of Palestinian leaders did attend the funeral.Liberman called for a boycott of all Joint List appearances and speeches before the Knesset. He called the party’s actions surrounding Peres’s death a “red line.”“Liberman’s initiatives to harm the political representation of Arab citizens only strengthen us, just like his fear-mongering only makes the Joint List greater,” Odeh said according to the Jerusalem Post. “We will continue acting in all arenas, including the parliamentary one, to promote peace and equality.”

PA officials: Abbas in good health, but may continue tests in Jordan-After brief hospitalization over heart scare last week, West Bank sources say life of PA chief ‘not in danger at all’-By Times of Israel staff and AP October 8, 2016, 7:28 pm

West Bank officials on Saturday insisted that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was in good health following last week’s health scare, but would travel to the Jordanian capital for further medical tests if his Ramallah doctors recommended it.Palestinian sources emphasized the 81-year-old leader’s life was “not in danger at all,” according to Channel 10 News.Abbas on Thursday underwent an emergency cardiac catheterization at the Istishari Hospital in Ramallah after suffering exhaustion and chest pains. He was discharged later that day and given a clean bill of health by heart specialist Dr. Mohammed al-Batrawi, who said the procedures he ordered for the president were routine. The health scare drew attention to the chaotic leadership situation in the Palestinian territories — where there is no succession plan for the aging leader and which are divided between two rival governments.Abbas, who has a history of health issues, was elected president in 2005 for what was supposed to be a four-year term. But in 2007 the rival Hamas terror group seized control of the Gaza Strip, and Abbas has remained in power. The Palestinians are currently divided between two governments, Abbas’s Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and the Hamas government in Gaza. Attempts at reconciliation have repeatedly failed, and this week the Palestinians called off plans to hold municipal elections in the two territories.Abbas, who is a heavy smoker and is overweight, was treated years ago with prostate cancer and has had a stent inserted to treat artery blockage. He also is under great pressure as his popularity has plummeted. The Palestinian public is frustrated over years of failed peace efforts with Israel. Over the past week, he also has come under heavy criticism at home for attending the funeral of the late Israeli president Shimon Peres.Over the years, Abbas has ignored calls to appoint a successor, setting the stage for a bitter power struggle if he is incapacitated.A long list of senior officials and security chiefs would likely covet the job, though there is no clear front-runner. Perhaps the most popular potential successor, Marwan Barghouti, is serving multiple life sentences in an Israeli prison for his role in deadly attacks on Israelis. Hamas would also likely demand a say in choosing a new leader.Even choosing a caretaker leader ahead of future elections will be a difficult task. Under Palestinian law, the parliament speaker is supposed to take over if the president is incapacitated or dies. But the current speaker, Aziz Dweik, is a member of Hamas.Abbas’s Fatah party has argued that since parliament has not functioned in nearly a decade, Dweik would not be eligible to lead the Palestinians.
