TEHRAN (FNA)- 4 Iranian-American nationals who were held for various charges in Iran have been freed under a prisoners swap deal, Tehran's prosecutor announced Saturday afternoon."Based on an approval of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and the general interests of the Islamic Republic, four Iranian prisoners with dual-nationality were freed today within the framework of a prisoner swap deal," the office of Tehran prosecutor said. The four Iranian-Americans, Jason Rezaian, Amir Hekmat, Saeed Abedini and Nosratollah Khosrawi who were jailed in Iran on various charges in recent years, have all been released. According o the swap deal, the US has also freed 6 Iranian-Americans who were held for sanctions-related charges.A senior Iranian legislator citing an IRGC report on Rezaian's case said in October that he has been imprisoned for his attempts to help the US Senate to advance its regime change plots in Iran.In late July 2014, Iran confirmed that four journalists, including Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian, had been arrested and were being held for questioning.Rezaian's wife Yeganeh Salehi, a correspondent for the United Arab Emirates-based newspaper, the National, was also arrested at that time, but she and two others were released later.According to the Constitution, the Judiciary is independent from the government in Iran. Some reports earlier this year had spoken of a potential prisoner swap between Iran and US following the Vienna nuclear deal in July.

Iran hints prisoner swap may be way to free jailed American journalist-The speaker of Iran’s parliament said in an interview that a prisoner swap was ‘one way’ Washington Post bureau chief Jason Rezaian might be liberated-Jason Rezaian-Lauren Gambino in New York-Friday 4 September 2015 21.38 BST-Last modified on Wednesday 2 December 2015 16.44 GMT

The speaker of Iran’s parliament has hinted that a prisoner swap is one possible way to free jailed American journalist Jason Rezaian, who has been tried on espionage charges in a closed Tehran court.During an interview with NPR published on Thursday, Ali Larijani was asked if he could foresee a “practical way” to liberate both Rezaian, who is awaiting sentencing after more than a year spent in prison, and the other Americans held in Iran.“There are practical ways of course,” Larijani said. “For example, there is a number of Iranians in prison here. Definitely for matters of this sort, one can come up with solutions. I think your politicians know about those ways.”Pressed on whether he was suggesting a prisoner swap, Larijani replied: “That’s one way. There are other ways that the judiciary systems of the two countries can come up with. It is the judiciary that has to decide about it.”Though the Iranian politician does not have direct authority over Rezaian, his brother, Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, is the head of Iran’s judiciary system.Larijani suggestion’s that Iran may be open to a prisoner swap came in sharp contrast to recent comments made by Iran’s deputy foreign minister Hassan Qashqavi, who suggested that no such plan was under consideration. According to the Associated Press, Qashqavi told Iran’s Tasnim and Fars news agencies: “An exchange of Jason Rezaian is not on the agenda. Each of the issues has their own separate case.” Qashqavi’s comments were first time a high-level official has alluded to the possibility of such a trade, the AP reported.US officials have said they raise the issue of the detained Americans on each occasion they meet with their Iranian counterparts.Rezaian’s closed-door trial, which began in May, played out during a crucial moment in the ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and the west. His lawyer was recently quoted in early August as saying a verdict was expected imminently though relatives of his are still waiting for it to be issued.Rezaian has been held in Iran since July 2014, when he was arrested along with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, and another couple. Rezaian is the only one who remains in prison. The couple were released shortly after their arrest, and Salehi, also a journalist, was released on bail in October and faces a separate trial. Some have suggested Rezian’s captivity was tied to political tensions around the nuclear negotiations, though US officials have said they deliberately kept the negotiations separate from the release of the American prisoners, in case the talks faltered. Others have speculated that Rezaian was caught in the crossfire of political infighting among competing factions within the government. Two other Americans are being held by Iran, Amir Hekmati, a US marine veteran who just marked four years in captivity, and Saeed Abedini, a Christian pastor whose been held since 2012. Robert Levinson, another American, disappeared in Iran while on CIA mission eight years ago.

Top US, Iranian envoys eye end of sanctions against Iran-Associated Press By GEORGE JAHN and BRADLEY KLAPPER-JAN 16,16-YAHOONEWS

VIENNA (AP) — The end of Western sanctions against Iran loomed Saturday as Iran's foreign minister suggested the U.N. atomic agency is close to certifying that his country has met all commitments under its landmark nuclear deal with six world powers.Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held a series of meetings in Vienna with his European Union and U.S. counterparts — including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry — on implementing the accord."All oppressive sanctions imposed against Iran will be annulled today," Zarif said on Iranian state TV — a reference to the start of the process that will end financial and other penalties imposed on his country once the U.N. agency says Tehran has fulfilled its obligations to restrict its nuclear programs in the deal reached last summer.Certification by the International Atomic Energy Agency would allow Iran to immediately recoup some $100 billion in assets frozen overseas. The benefits of new oil, trade and financial opportunities from suspended sanctions could prove far more valuable for Tehran in the long run.Kerry and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini were in Vienna, headquarters to the IAEA, for separate meetings with Zarif.Despite Zarif's optimistic comments about the approaching end to sanctions, both he and Kerry deflected a question about whether their deal would be implemented later in the day." We're trying," said Zarif."We're working on it," added Kerry, seated across the table from Zarif in an ornate room at a luxury Vienna hotel. In his earlier comments to Iranian television, Zarif said the deal between his country and the six world powers would hold, telling Iranian media that all parties would "not allow the outcome of these talks to be wasted."The agreement, struck after decades of hostility, defused the likelihood of U.S. or Israeli military action against Iran, something Zarif alluded to."Our region has been freed from shadow of an unnecessary conflict that could have caused concerns for the region," he said. "Today is also a good day for the world. Today will prove that we can solve important problems through diplomacy."Iran insists all of its nuclear activities are peaceful. But under the July 14 deal, Iran agreed to crimp programs which could be used to make nuclear weapons in return for an end to sanctions. The agreement puts Iran's various nuclear activities under IAEA watch for up to 15 years, with an option to re-impose sanctions should Tehran break its commitments.
