Refugees could promote anti-Semitism, Jewish group says-By EUOBSERVER-OCT 28,15

Today, 09:31-The Central Council of Jews in Germany warned German chancellor Merkel Tuesday refugees could stoke anti-Semitic feeling in Germany because they "come from countries in which Israel is viewed as the enemy”, Merkel's CDU party said. Some EU politicians have also stigmatised refugees as potential terrorists and disease carriers.

Facebook’s platform connects inciters to terrorists, plaintiffs charge-20,000 Israelis sue Facebook for ignoring Palestinian incitement-Class-action suit filed in Brooklyn requires social network to immediately remove all posts ‘containing incitement to murder Jews’-By JTA and Times of Israel staff October 27, 2015, 2:05 am 118

A class-action lawsuit against Facebook is accusing the social media platform of ignoring widespread Palestinian posts calling for violence against Jews.In the suit filed Monday in New York State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, the 20,000 Israeli plaintiffs claim the Facebook posts have inspired many recent terror attacks and that “Facebook’s algorithms and platform connects inciters to terrorists who are further encouraged to perpetrate stabbings and other violence attacks against Israelis.”According to a news release issued by the plaintiffs, many recent assailants “were motivated to commit their heinous crimes by incitement to murder they read on Facebook — demagogues and leaders exhorting their followers to “slaughter the Jews,” and offering instruction as to the best manner to do so, including even anatomical charts showing the best places to stab a human being.”The suit alleges that Facebook has a “legal and moral obligation” to block much of this content but that it chooses not to.The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction against Facebook requiring the social network to “immediately remove all pages, groups and posts containing incitement to murder Jews; to actively monitor its website for such incitement that all incitement is immediately removed prior to being disseminated to masses of terrorists and would-be terrorists; and to cease serving as matchmaker between terrorists, terrorist organizations, and those who incite others to commit terrorism.”The complaint does not seek monetary damages against Facebook. The lead plaintiff, Richard Lakin, 76, died of his wounds Tuesday after he was shot and stabbed by Palestinian terrorists while riding on a crowded Jerusalem bus on October 13. Two other Israelis were killed and more than 20 were wounded in the attack.Three attorneys — Robert Tolchin of New York; Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the director of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, and Asher Perlin of Fort Lauderdale, Florida — filed the suit.In a news release issued by her organization, Darshan-Leitner said, “Facebook wields tremendous power and this publicly traded company needs to utilize it in a way that ensures that Palestinian extremists who are calling to stab Israelis and glorifying the terrorist that do, are not permitted to do it on its platform.”An article published Saturday by The Associated Press said that social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook, is the “number one source of news among young Palestinians.” Some 3.7 million Palestinians follow the Quds News Network, believed to be affiliated with Islamic Jihad, on the social media platform and 4.2 million follow the Shehab News Network, which is believed to be affiliated with Hamas, AP reported. The Times of Israel reported last week that Facebook pages such as Quds News Network (3.6 million followers on Facebook, 264,000 on twitter); Shehab News Agency (4.1 million followers on Facebook, 99,000 on twitter), and Urgent from Gaza (282,000 followers on Facebook) flood Palestinian computer screens with gruesome images of dead Palestinians and caricatures encouraging more attacks, often accompanied by a hashtag ordering “stab!” or warning “al-Aqsa is in danger!”Approximately one third of Palestinian society in Jerusalem and the West Bank is active on social media, said Orit Perlov, a research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) who specializes in Palestinian social media.“There are no borders in social media,” she said. “The same message resonates in Gaza, Jerusalem and Umm al-Fahm.”In recent months, she added, Israel and the PA have been monitoring and arresting prominent Palestinian social media activists in Jerusalem and the West Bank, leaving the arena “like an octopus with tentacles but no head.”

PM rebukes deputy FM for dreaming of Israeli flag on Temple Mount-Netanyahu clarifies yet again that status quo at religious site remains; Hotovely says she was expressing private opinion-By Times of Israel staff October 27, 2015, 12:58 am 11

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned members of his government on Monday night to “act accordingly,” hours after his deputy foreign minister, Tzipi Hotovely, also from his Likud party, said her dream was for the Israeli flag to fly over the Temple Mount. In a statement released to the press, the Prime Minister’s Office said the Israeli government’s position vis-a-vis the contested Jerusalem site is well known and “nothing has changed.”The prime minister “made it clear that he expects all members of the government to act accordingly,” Netanyahu’s office said in the statement, in a clear rebuke of the deputy foreign minister. The prime minister has repeatedly insisted, most recently on Saturday night after US Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II in Jordan, that Israel has no intention of changing the status quo on the Temple Mount.Hotovely said Monday that the site was “the center of Israeli sovereignty, the capital of Israel, the holiest place for the Jewish people.”“It’s my dream to see the Israeli flag flying on the Temple Mount,” she said in an interview with the Knesset channel.Hours later, she issued a statement clarifying that her “private opinions were not government policy” and that she was “committed to the policy by which the prime minister said that there would be no change to the status quo.”Hotovely, who favors the annexation of the West Bank and opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state, has made public visits to the Temple Mount in recent years along with a handful of other right-wing Israeli lawmakers. She recently said that any international observers placed on the Temple Mount would be a violation of Israel’s sovereignty.“If I were to tell the prime minister what’s correct, in my eyes it’s definitely not proper to see the flags of the Islamic State or Hamas, in my eyes that’s a disgrace,” she said. “We need to fly the [Israeli] flag. This is the capital of Israel and this is the holiest place for the Jewish people.”Israel captured the Temple Mount from Jordan during the 1967 Six Day War. Just hours after Israeli paratroopers took control of the Temple Mount, then-defense minister Moshe Dayan ordered the Israeli flag — which the soldiers had quickly raised — to be lowered. Since then, there hasn’t been one on the flashpoint religious site.Jews consider the compound, site of two Jewish temples in antiquity, to be their holiest place. Muslims consider the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which stands atop the Temple Mount, to be the third-holiest site in Islam.Hotovely’s remarks were met with criticism from opposition lawmaker Yoel Hasson of the Zionist Union, who called on Netanyahu to dismiss her immediately.“The messianic deputy minister continues to inflame the entire Middle East,” Hasson said. “Every few months she repeats her calls to fly the Israeli flag on the Temple Mount, as if the situation weren’t volatile enough.”The Temple Mount has been the focus of violent clashes between Palestinian rioters and Israeli security forces in recent months, and an ongoing escalation of violence, involving dozens of Palestinian stabbing attacks on Israelis, has been triggered, in part, by Palestinian claims that Israel intends to change the status quo on the religious site. Israel has repeatedly denied the claims.Non-Muslims are permitted to visit the compound in Jerusalem’s Old City, but non-Muslim prayer is not allowed. The site is administered by the Jordanian Waqf.Hasson called for Hotovely’s dismissal from the government “for the sake of the security of Israel.”

WATCH: Mother of Palestinian terrorist threatens own stabbing attack-Umm Muhammad Shamasne hopes her other sons will follow in footsteps of their brother, killed while carrying out terror attack on bus in Jerusalem-By Times of Israel staff October 26, 2015, 11:01 pm 26

The mother of a Palestinian terrorist who was killed while perpetrating a terror attack aboard a Jerusalem bus earlier this month said she hoped her other sons would follow in his footsteps, and, with knife in hand, announced her intention to carry out her own attack against Israelis.During an interview with the Lebanese Al-Quds TV channel, Umm Muhammad Shamasne said the family was proud of her son, who was “martyred for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” and said she was only angry that “he did not take me to be martyred with him.”“We regret nothing, we are proud of him,” Shamasne said, acknowledging that the family had been aware of Muhammad’s intentions to carry out an attack against Israelis.“Let Mu’tasim and Yousuf be martyred as well. It is all a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa and Palestine,” she said. After offering the interviewer candy to celebrate her son’s martyrdom, Shamasne pulled out a knife concealed beneath her clothes and said, while making stabbing motions: “Watch out, Israel! Watch out!”The journalist asked Shamasne to put the knife away, saying “such spectacles” were inappropriate for the television interview. “I understand the searing pain, the anger, and the tension, but we can’t have such things, if you’ll forgive me,” the reporter said, before turning the subject to home demolitions.Shamasne appeared to be undeterred by Israel’s punitive measure of demolishing the homes of Palestinian terrorists.“The homes will be a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa. I will sacrifice my four children for the sake of Al-Aqsa, and I will be the first to sacrifice myself for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” she said.“Watch out, Israel. You have brought the fire of Hell upon yourself, and you don’t know who you’re dealing with. You have brought the fire of Hell upon yourself, Israel,” Shamasne warned.“There’s no need for me to say any more. My deeds will speak louder than words,” she concluded.Shortly after 8 p.m. on October 12, 22-year-old Muhammad Shamasne boarded bus No. 185 near the entrance to Jerusalem and stabbed a 19-year-old Israel Defense Forces soldier and unsuccessfully tried to grab his gun. The soldier and a civilian were lightly injured in the attack.Shamasne was shot and killed by police while passengers were attempting to subdue him.The October 22 interview was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, a US media watchdog group, and was uploaded on Monday.

Israel pans ‘absurdity’ as Venezuela elected to join UNHRC-Terrorist arrested after stabbing Israeli woman in West Bank; victim evacuated to hospital in moderate condition-By Marissa Newman October 28, 2015, 1:40 pm 20-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

The Times of Israel is liveblogging Wednesday’s developments as they unfold.19:03-Rivlin says he fears for democracy, not his life-President Reuven Rivlin says he doesn’t fear for his life or that of his wife, but he does fear for Israel’s democracy. The president was responding to a perceived threat by Hagai Amir, brother and accomplice to the killer of ex-prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, on Facebook. Amir was arrested on Tuesday and freed to house arrest on Wednesday.“I do not fear for my life. My wife is also not afraid,” says Rivlin. “We fear for democracy.”The president says that he backs the legal system’s interpretation of the line between free speech and incitement in Israel.18:56-MKs vote to make Arabic compulsory in schools-Israeli lawmakers vote to make Arabic classes compulsory for students from the age of six, in a move backers hope would help improve ties between Israeli Jews and Arabs.Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, votes unanimously in favor of the bill in a first reading on Wednesday, with about half of all deputies in attendance. It will now be studied in committee before returning to parliament for a second vote. The bill was introduced by lawmaker Oren Hazan, of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud Party, who says it is meant to reach out to Arab Israelis.“Language is a door to culture,” he tells AFP. “I am looking reality in the eyes and I understand there is no possibility to walk to peace without understanding each other.”— AFP-18:31-Venezuela elected to Human Rights Council-Venezuela is elected to the UN Human Rights Council, in a move slammed by Israel as “absurd.”“There is no limit to the absurdity — Venezuela is the greatest ally of Iran and North Korea,” says Israeli envoy to the UN Danny Danon, according to a Hebrew statement. “You should remember this day the next time you hear that the council condemned Israel. When a state like this — that oppresses its citizens with violence, limits freedom of the press for journalists and jails those opposed to the regime — sits on the council, it isn’t surprising that the council chooses to condemn Israel more than any other country in the world.”18:08-We must not get used to terror — Liberman-Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman says Israelis must not accept daily terror attacks on civilians.“We must not get used to terror,” he says. “Just as they tried to have us get used to the ‘trickle’ of rockets from Gaza, now they are trying to have us live with daily knife attacks. In both cases, these are serious failings of a government that cannot grant security for its citizens. We cannot accept this and we must demand that the government combat terror without compromise.”18:01-Jewish-Catholic relations ‘better than ever’ — WJC-Marking the 50-year anniversary of the landmark declaration by which the Vatican ended centuries of officially condoned anti-Semitism and urged bridge-building with all other faiths, the World Jewish Congress says Jewish-Catholic relations are “better than ever.”“What has happened since ‘Nostra Aetate’ is nothing short of a miracle,” Ronald Lauder, the president of the WJC, says at a press conference in Rome, adding that 150 Jewish leaders had attended the papal audience.“Relations between Catholics and Jews on many levels, not just the highest, are now better than ever.”The document, adopted by cardinals and bishops around the world, also reached out to Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims.— AFP contributed

UN resolution would freeze settlements, Palestinian lawsuits-New Zealand’s Security Council initiative marks the latest effort to restart direct talks based on two-state solution-By Tamar Pileggi October 28, 2015, 12:05 pm 27-THE TIMES OF ISRAEL

In the latest effort to revive direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, New Zealand has drafted a UN resolution that reportedly calls for a freeze on Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and for Palestinians to abandon their bid to take legal action against Israel at the International Criminal Court. The draft resolution would assert that the Security Council is “very concerned” over the stalled peace talks, and call on both parties to “take the necessary measures to rebuild confidence and prepare for the resumption of negotiations,” based on a two-state solution, Haaretz reported on Wednesday. The draft urges both sides to avoid taking “actions or declarations that would harm mutual confidence or predetermine the results of negotiations,” including the expansion of settlements and demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, the report said.Distributed to the other 14 members of the Security Council on Friday, the resolution would also call on both sides to refrain from making “provocative actions” against the status quo on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, the epicenter of recent unrest in Israel and the West Bank.It would further call on Palestinians to refrain from “lodging complaints against Israel or the situation in the territories at the International Court in The Hague.”The resolution would appeal to Security Council member states, Arab supporters of the Saudi peace initiative and Quartet representatives, to support Israelis and Palestinians in preparing for renewed talks.Last week, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully told the Security Council he hoped the measure would help “stimulate a level of debate” on the way forward as Israel and the Palestinians sink deeper into violence.“The events of recent weeks cry out for council action,” said McCully.New Zealand’s initiative was floated after France circulated a draft for a council statement that failed to win agreement, highlighting difficulties to forge a consensus in the 15-member council. The French draft called for the stationing of international observers on the Temple Mount.Diplomats said they did not expect New Zealand’s proposal to be a game-changer, but the initiative underscored the need for the Security Council to take a more active role. The council has not adopted a resolution on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since 2009 and its last formal statement dates back to September 17, when it called for calm at the Temple Mount.AFP contributed to this report.
