A truck rammed into a group of soldiers on a promenade in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem, killing at least four of them, in a vehicle-ramming attack on Sunday afternoon, police said.Police chief Roni Alsheich called the incident a vehicular terror attack. The soldiers were getting off a bus at the promenade, a popular tourist spot in southern Jerusalem, when a large flatbed truck ran into them.At least 16 more people were injured, some of them seriously, according to Jerusalem hospitals. The four soldiers — three women and one man — who died were in their 20s, the Magen David Adom rescue service said.According to police, the terrorist accelerated as he struck the group.Eyewitnesses said that after the driver hit the soldiers with his truck, he put the vehicle in reverse and ran over them a second time.Footage of the incident taken from a security camera showed the truck run into the group of soldiers as they stood next to a bus. The driver then attempts to turn the truck around and run over the group again as people scramble for cover.-Warning graphic content-The driver of the vehicle was shot by both soldiers and by a civilian guide, police said. He died of his wounds.“In a fraction of a second during which I was speaking with one of the officers, I saw the truck plowing into us. After a few rolls on the grass I saw the truck start to reverse and then I already understood that this was not an accident. I felt that my pistol was still on me, so I ran up to him and started emptying my clip. He went in reverse and again drove over the injured,” the guide, Eitan Rod, told Army Radio.Speaking to Israeli television, Rod questioned why soldiers hesitated, he said, before turning their own weapons on the driver. “I have to ask why it took a 30-year-old civilian to fire first,” he said, “when there were well-armed officers” present. He asserted that last week’s conviction for manslaughter of soldier Elor Azaria, who shot dead a disarmed, injured Palestinian assailant, was “definitely” a factor in the ostensible hesitation. An initial IDF investigation showed one soldier fired on the driver at about the same time as Rod, while others fled, Channel 2 reported.Moshe Aharon, the driver of the bus, told Army Radio that “a group of soldiers was standing with their bags near the bus. I had just let them off. The truck drove into the group of soldiers, ran over them and kept going. The soldiers shot at the driver. He reversed and ran over them again.”Leah Schreiber, one of the guides for the group of soldiers, told reporters that the driver had reversed and run over the bodies again.“I was explaining about the view of Jerusalem. I saw soldiers shouting and screaming. Some of the soldiers started shooting. It took some time to kill [the driver] so he was able to reverse. The whole thing took maybe a minute and a half,” Schreiber said.At first, it was not clear if this was an accident or a deliberate attack, but Schreiber said she “understood it was a terror attack when they started shooting at him.”A number of victims were trapped under the truck after the incident, according to an MDA paramedic on the scene. The soldiers were visiting the capital as part of the army’s “Culture Sundays,” in which troops are taken to important historical and national sites at the beginning of the week.According to the Ben Zvi Institute, which led the trip for the army, the soldiers were from the IDF’s officer’s training course. The driver of the truck was identified as Fadi al-Qanbar, a resident of the capital’s Jabel Mukaber neighborhood, according to Arab media. The truck, with Israeli license plates, came from the direction of that neighborhood, which is adjacent to the promenade. He was in his 20s, married with a son, and had served time in Israeli jail, Channel 2 said. One seriously injured soldier was sent to Shaare Zedek hospital. She was unconscious and doctors were attempting to stabilize her, a spokesperson for the hospital said.Another four victims who were lightly injured were also sent to Shaare Zedek, the hospital said.Nine victims were sent to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, one in serious condition, two in moderate condition and six lightly wounded. Two victims who were lightly injured were sent to Hadassah Hospital Mt. Scopus, the hospital said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the Hamas terror group praised the attack as “heroic.”Hamas spokesman Hazaem Qassem lauded the attack on his Facebook page, saying, “These operations demonstrate that all attempts to bypass the resistance or to thwart it will fail every time.”Palestinian assailants have used vehicle rammings as a method for terror attacks for years, and the method seemed to have been adopted by European jihadists in recent months, including in an attack in Berlin last month that left 12 dead, including an Israeli woman.Less than an hour after the attack, a Jerusalem court imposed a gag order on the investigation. The Haas-Sherover Promenade promenade is a southern location that offers a panoramic view over Jerusalem and the Old City. In May, two elderly women were stabbed and moderately injured in a park below the promenade in what police said was a terror attack.Melanie Lidman and Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Father of terrorist reportedly arrested as Hamas hails ‘heroic’ attack-Driver who killed 4 in truck-ramming attack, named as Fadi al-Qanbar, said to be married man in his 20s from East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber-By Times of Israel staff January 8, 2017, 4:40 pm
The father of the driver of a truck that plowed into group of soldiers Sunday on a promenade in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem, killing four people and injuring 16 others, was arrested by Israeli security forces just after hours after the attack, Palestinian reports said.Earlier, Hebrew media had reported that a large number of heavily armed Border Police officers had surrounded the terrorist’s house in the Jabel Mukabar neighborhood of East Jerusalem.Israel Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich said there was “no prior warning” of what he labeled a vehicular terror attack. He added that the driver sought a high victim count and had driven around the area in Armon Hanatziv to find a large group of people before plowing his truck into the group of soldiers.Alsheich also said the terrorist was a resident of East Jerusalem.Palestinian media reports named him as Fadi al-Qanbar, 28, from the nearby neighborhood of Jabel Mukabar. Channel 2 said he was in his 20s, married with a son, and had served time in Israeli prison. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Izz Ad-Din Al-Qassam Brigades — Hamas’ military wing — praised it as “heroic,” with the group’s spokesperson Hazaem Qassem writing on Facebook that “the continuous operations in the West Bank and Jerusalem prove that the Jerusalem Intifada is not an isolated event, but rather a decision by the Palestinian people to revolt until they attain their freedom and liberation from the Israeli occupation.”He also added that “these operations demonstrate that all attempts to bypass the resistance or to thwart it will fail every time.”Hamas also said that al-Qanbar had previously been imprisoned in Israel, although it did not provide any specifics for why he was imprisoned or when he was released.A group of soldiers were getting off a bus at the promenade, a popular tourist spot in southern Jerusalem, when al-Qanbar drove a large flatbed truck into them. The four soldiers — three women and one man — who were killed were in their 20s, the Magen David Adom rescue service said. Sixteen more people were injured, two of them very seriously.According to police, the driver accelerated as he struck the group. After the driver hit the soldiers with his truck, he put the vehicle in reverse and ran over them a second time. The terrorist was shot by soldiers and a civilian guide, police said. Soldiers hesitated before opening fire on truck driver, guide says-Man who shot at terrorist says lives might have been saved if troops had reacted sooner, references Elor Azaria-By Times of Israel staff January 8, 2017, 4:19 pm
Soldiers who were targeted in Monday’s truck-ramming attack in Jerusalem might have prevented some of the loss of life and injury if they had not hesitated in opening fire on the terrorist, according to the tour guide who was with them and helped bring down the driver. The truck rammed into a group of soldiers on a promenade in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem, killing at least four of them and wounding at least 15 others. The driver of the vehicle was shot by both the soldiers and by their civilian guide, police said. He died of his wounds. But the guide said the soldiers, cadets from the officers’ training school, had hesitated.“I’m a tour guide, I was supposed to be guiding groups of youths. We didn’t even manage to say hello before it all happened. I don’t understand why 40 soldiers who were there did not shoot,” the guide, Eitan Rod, told Channel 10.“It’s not pleasant to say, but there could have been a lot fewer wounded,” he said, adding that he fired 12 bullets at the driver, emptying his clip, but even then “he was not neutralized.”“After I decided to open fire at him, several soldiers also opened fire. He took a breath and carried on running people over,” he said.“Lives could have been saved,” he told Channel 2.Rod, who was lightly injured in the attack, referenced the case of Elor Azaria, a soldier recently convicted of manslaughter for killing a wounded and supine Palestinian stabber, as a possible reason behind the troops not grabbing their weapons right away.Security camera footage of the incident shows chaos as soldiers scramble for cover and run away while the driver tries to reverse back into them.Police chief Roni Alsheich called the incident a vehicular terror attack. The Ben Zvi Institute, which was conducting the educational tour for the soldiers, said there was a group of 300 officer cadets there at the time and that the attack happened right at the start of the event.“The Ben Zvi Institute is horrified at the attack on innocent participants and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the institute said, adding that it was sure it would not “prevent many tours from taking place in Jerusalem.”The soldiers were visiting the capital as part of the army’s “Culture Sundays,” in which troops are taken to important historical and national sites at the beginning of the week.
