Hotovely Tells Foreign Ministry to Quote Torah to the World-Deputy FM in speech tells Israeli envoys worldwide to reference Torah in arguing Israel's right to all of the land.By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 5/22/2015, 2:57 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) told Israeli envoys on Thursday to reference the Torah in presenting the historical rights of the Jewish people to the entire land of Israel while representing the state.
In a video seen by AFP on Friday, Hotovely is seen addressing the foreign ministry staff in Jerusalem on Thursday. The speech reportedly was beamed to 106 Israeli missions overseas."It is important to say that this land is ours, all of it is ours. We didn't come here to apologize for this," she said.Hotovely has supported Jewish sovereignty in the Biblical heartland of the ancient Jewish state located in Judea and Samaria."The international community deals with considerations of morality and justice. Facing this, we have to return to the basic truth of our right to this land," Hotovely emphasized.Hotovely also quoted the commentary of the famous Jewish scholar Rashi on the book of Genesis, in which he wrote that the Torah begins with describing the creation of the world so that if the nations of the world accuse the Jews of stealing the land of Israel, they can respond that the entire world belongs to G-d and He chose to give Israel to them.A participant at the event told AFP that a few of the diplomats were surprised to hear Hotovely referencing the Torah to support Israel's right to the land, evidently indicating how such arguments have not been commonplace in the foreign ministry.
Hotovely: There is a Consensus in Israel Regarding Jerusalem-Deputy Foreign Minister meets Norwegian Foreign, tells him Israelis agree that Jerusalem must remain united.By Hezki Ezra-First Publish: 5/20/2015, 5:15 AM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) on Tuesday met with visiting Norwegian Foreign Minister Borge Brende, and told her guest that there is a consensus among Israelis that Jerusalem must remain united.Hotovely said that the new Israeli government "represents the desire for dialogue and opposes unilateral steps by the Palestinians.""It is very important to the State of Israel that Europe, including the Norwegian government, will not support unilateral steps by the Palestinians," she told Brende."We expect you to put pressure on the Palestinian leadership to recognize Israel's existence as a Jewish state," added Hotovely. She also noted in her conversation with Brende that Jerusalem Day was marked in the Knesset this week, adding that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu declared that Jerusalem will remain united and that even opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog agreed with this statement."The Norwegian government has to realize that there is an Israeli consensus regarding the unity of Jerusalem," Hotovely said. The meeting comes amid international pressure on Israel to stop building new homes in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.Recently, Israel approved construction of 900 homes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo, a haredi neighbor hood in the eastern part of the capital. The European Union later criticized the Israeli plans, saying “Israel's determination to continue its settlement policy despite the urging of the international community not only threatens the viability of the two state solution but also seriously calls into question its commitment to a negotiated agreement with the Palestinians.”The State Department in Washington also condemned the move, calling it "disappointing" and "damaging".
Joyous Return to 130-Year Old Eastern Jerusalem Synagogue-77 years after Arab riots followed by British expulsion and apathy, Jews return to Yemenite Village synagogue on slopes of Mt. of Olives-By Hillel Fendel-Last Update: 5/26/2015, 12:48 PM-israelnationalnews
For the first time in 77 years, festive Jewish prayers were held on Monday in one of modern Jerusalem's oldest synagogues: The long-hidden and inaccessible Hechal Shlomo of the Yemenite village.Dozens of people took part in the joyous festivities, which marked the full circle of Jewish settlement in eastern Jerusalem. Minister of Agriculture Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) – amidst traditional Yemenite Jewish prayers, music and foods, and some Ashkenazim and Sepharadim as well – took part in the re-dedication of the synagogue. Affixing the mezuzah to the doorpost, he recited the traditional blessings, including "Blessed is He Who restores the borders of the widow."It was back in 1885 that Yisrael Dov Frumkin founded the village, built the synagogue, and paved the way for some 65 Yemenite Jewish families to live on the slopes of the Mt. of Olives. Most of the land land had been contributed by a Zionist philanthropist known as Boaz HaBavli. The settlement thrived, but in the 1930's, the Arab riots that engulfed the Land of Israel did not pass over the Yemenite Village. The British rulers told the Jews that they could not protect them and that they must leave, but promised to look after their property and that they could later return.Daniel Luria of the Ateret Cohanim Association, which oversaw the modern return to the synagogue, explained what happened next: "A year later, Shlomo Ze'evi – father of the famous Rehavam (Gandi) Ze'evi – stood in this very synagogue, and was shocked and angered at the destruction that the Arabs had wrought here." There was also great bitterness at the British and their promises; the Jews were not allowed to return to their homes.
Now, years later, Ateret Cohanim and many happy Jews were able to return and celebrate another milestone in the national return of the Jewish People to their sacred homeland. This followed great efforts in re-purchasing the Jewish owned properties, resettling Jewish families in various buildings around the neighborhood, and carefully identifying each structure."Over the years, many Jewish families have returned here," Luria said, "to Beit Yehonatan, Beit HaDvash, Beit Ovadiah, Beit Frumkin; it's not that Zionism was dead here. But now, we have the synagogue back! A place for prayer and Torah study for the entire community."The synagogue has been renamed Ohel Yehonatan, in honor of Jonathan Pollard, now in his 30th year of a life sentence in American prison. He was convicted on a charge of passing classified information to a friendly country – Israel – a charge whose average sentence in the United States is between two and four years in prison.-Luria emphasized very clearly: "People must understand that this neighborhood was built by Yemenite Jews 130 years ago - way before any Arabs ever lived here." He pointed to a photograph taken at the time: "This shows the Jewish houses, and the synagogue itself in which we are standing now – and nothing else around them." Now, of course, the houses are surrounded by dense Arab construction, much of it illegal.Minister Ariel's wife Chagit, another participant in the festivities, recounted how she traveled to a small village near Netanya several years ago "to find one of the original residents of this village, and I brought her here – even before any Jews had returned here to Beit Yehonatan, etc. - to find the exact building in which she had lived. It was so exciting and moving – and now, it's like a miracle that we also have the synagogue back!""With G-d's help, the Yemenite Village will return to be what it once was," Minister Ariel said, "just like the rest of the Land of Israel. All we need is true peace between Jews, and then we can work things out with everyone else."
Rabbi Riskin: Chief Rabbinate Must Speak to Everyone-Chief Rabbi of Efrat puzzles over dismissal rumors, notes that Rabbinate is important - but must address non-haredi communities.By Tova Dvorin-First Publish: 5/26/2015, 1:44 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Chief Rabbi of Efrat Rabbi Shlomo Riskin spoke for the first time publicly Tuesday morning about reports that he will be deposed, stating to Army Radio his disbelief that he would be relieved of his post for his views on conversion and other issues."I do not want to believe that because of the conversion issue, which is a very important issue today in Israel, they want to terminate my service the rabbinate," Rabbi Riskin said.Rabbi Riskin said that he "respects" the Rabbinate, but notes that he believes that it should broaden its approach toward Jews. At the moment, the Rabbinate leans very heavily toward a strict haredi interpretation of Jewish law, as evidenced by Monday's refusal to change the wording on the Temple Mount sign."I do not do anything outside the halakhic [Jewish law - ed.] consensus to open the gates of conversion," he noted.Rabbi Riskin said that he supports the existence of the Chief Rabbinate itself, despite differences of opinion over their views."I am in favor of the establishment and institution of the Chief Rabbinate," he clarified. "[But] I think it is also important that the Chief Rabbinate speaks to all the people of Israel and are willing to accept other halakhic opinions, not just haredi opinions.""I hope they (the Chief Rabbinate) get down off their high tree [a Hebrew phrase equivalent to 'come down from their high horse' - ed.]," he lamented. "I really do not understand them."The American-born Riskin has been Efrat's Chief Rabbi since the community in the Judean Mountains was founded in 1983.
Netanyahu: Israel Will Make the Most of Natural Gas Deposits-PM responds to allegations of natural gas 'cartel,' resignation of antitrust authority chief; 'We won't repeat the mistakes of others.'By Ari Soffer-First Publish: 5/26/2015, 5:33 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has vowed that Israel will act as soon as possible to tap into massive natural gas deposits off the Israeli coast, and said he won't allow the process to be delayed by the ongoing controversy over allegations it is being monopolized."We will not repeat the mistake that other countries made when they sought ideal solutions for their gas and sometimes for their oil and as a result of which both the gas and the oil have remained below the seabed or underground," Netanyahu declared at the start of Tuesday's cabinet meeting."They had an ideal solution that was not realistic. In this situation they could pat themselves on the back for wanting the most competitive framework that was never realized," he continued, but noted that as a result "many years have passed in which many countries have not seen a bit of energy from these sources.""We will not do this," Netanyahu vowed. "We will act in accordance with a prudent consideration that balances competition and worthwhileness and extracts the gas from the depths of the sea."His statement follows the resignation of the head of Israel's Antitrust Authority, David Gilo, who expressed his opposition to the dominant position of US giant Noble Energy and its Israeli partner Delek to exploit gas from the Leviathan and Tamar offshore gas fields. In his letter of resignation submitted to Economy Minister Aryeh Deri, Gilo wrote that preserving the stranglehold of Noble and Delek on the natural gas market "undermines competition, and the power of authority" of the Antitrust Authority. The watchdog moved late last year to scrap the deal that gave the two firms control over Leviathan, at the time classifying their partnership as a "cartel."The size of the Leviathan field is estimated at 535 billion cubic meters (18.9 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas, along with 34.1 million barrels of condensate, making it the largest gas deposit found in the world in a decade.Noble and Delek also control the Tamar field, which holds 250 bcm of natural gas, and lies 80 kilometers (43 nautical miles) west of the northern Israeli port city of Haifa. Netanyahu voiced his "regret" over Gilo's resignation, but insisted it would not sway his decision, asserting that the gas fields would deliver a significant boost to the Israeli economy."There is an outline here that is the result of expedited work by various experts in the field. They did not all agree. To my regret, the head of the Israel Antitrust Authority did not agree, but we are going forward."I will not allow any consideration or pressure, or populist moves to prevent the flow of gas to the State of Israel. We will extract this gas from the depths of the sea, we will bring it to the citizens of Israel and we will make society as a whole better off."Recent major oil and natural gas finds have already paid rich dividends to the Jewish state.
In April, it was revealed that profits from Israel's natural gas fields had made up for all the economic damage of last summer's war with Gaza terrorist groups. In 2013, prospectors said they had discovered what appeared to be a significant deposit of crude oil off the Israeli coast.
Dividing Foreign Ministry Functions Will Harm Israel'-Foreign Ministry diplomats warn that more authorities have been removed than in Liberman's term, results can be catastrophic.By Nitsan Keidar, Ari Yashar-First Publish: 5/26/2015, 6:55 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
Diplomats in the Foreign Ministry voiced their condemnation to Arutz Sheva against the decision to distribute the authority over various functions of the ministry to different ministers in the government.Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz has been given the intelligence portfolio of the ministry, while Interior Minister Silvan Shalom was tasked with peace talks and Israel-US relations. Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan will be handed the fight against the BDS boycott movement, and along with Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz will also handle the Iran issue. And all of that is aside from Tzipi Hotovely serving as Deputy Foreign Minister, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu holding the reins as de facto foreign minister."If a different minister receives authority for hasbara (public diplomacy - ed.) or the war against the anti-Israel movement, there's no doubt that harms us," diplomats in the Foreign Ministry told Arutz Sheva. "If we want to hold activities on campuses (in the US) and send speakers from Israel, there's a problem where the money for that will be taken from."Noting a different problem with the arrangement, they noted, "if a foreign minister arrives in Israel...they will need to meet five ministers, the deputy minister and the prime minister to get a full picture on issues of foreign relations, and that will only cause problems.""Also ministers who took over fields from the ministry and travel abroad will not update the deputy minister but only the prime minister, and that will harm our work," they warned. One of the diplomats summarized the new status quo by saying, "there's no doubt that the authority here has been harmed, and that is expressed most meaningfully in terms of responsibility. They took from the ministry more fields than were taken in the term of Avigdor Liberman," who served as foreign minister in the last coalition. The ministry also expressed disappointment that precisely one of the fields that it was tasked with until recently, namely the fight against the anti-Israel movement on US college campuses, was taken from its authority despite having made progress on the issue until now."The fragmentation of the ministry will only cause damage to Israel's foreign relations, and will in the end harm the state," warned the diplomats. In response to the fragmentation, MK Ofer Shelah (Yesh Atid) announced Tuesday that he plans to submit a bill to clarify the powers and responsibilities of the Foreign Ministry, and avoid splitting the functions of the office.

Peace Talks: 'Dangerous' or Expected?-Ministers face off over rumors that Netanyahu plans to revive peace talks, discuss 'settlement blocs' with PA.By Tova Dvorin-Last Update: 5/26/2015, 9:26 AM-ISRAEL NATIONALNEWS
Agriculture Minister MK Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) responded critically to reports claiming that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu intends to renew negotiations with the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Tuesday, and discuss with them the boundaries of "settlement blocs" in Judea and Samaria."If indeed there is truth in this, it is a dangerous precedent," Ariel said Tuesday morning. "The proposal clearly contradicts the first article of the government's guidelines - the people's unquestionable right to the Land of Israel and a sovereign state and its national historic homeland."Ariel added that he "expects all members of the coalition headed by the Prime Minister to keep those guidelines."Ariel's comments surface after Netanyahu stated in a meeting with European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs chief Frederica Mogherini last week that, in his eyes, the "two-state solution" is the "only solution," despite stating during his election campaign that he is against resuming peace talks.Arutz Sheva called the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to clarify Netanyahu's statements on Thursday, and was told that Netanyahu does support the two-state solution.Internal Security Minister MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) stated that no one should thus be surprised at the announcement and that a return to peace talks, if anything, was expected."Anyone who is in Likud knows that we will have to partner with the Palestinians to discuss not only our right to land and security needs, but also on a compromise that would include territorial concessions," Erdan, who was sworn into the government late Monday night, stated in an Army Radio interview Tuesday morning.Erdan qualified, however, that the likelihood of actually reaching an agreement is low."Are we there? Of course not," he said, noting that no one has "yet succeeded in bringing Mahmoud Abbas to the negotiating table and stopping his unilateral steps."However, he insisted that "peace will only be achieved around the negotiating table."
PA Refuses to Restart Peace Talks on 'Settlement Blocs'-Chief negotiator Erekat says report on Netanyahu wanting to restart talks and define 'blocs' is attempt to steal 'state of Palestine.'By Arutz Sheva Staff-First Publish: 5/26/2015, 3:30 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
The Palestinian Authority (PA) on Tuesday angrily dismissed reported remarks by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that he would like to restart "peace talks" to negotiate the boundaries of "settlement blocs" in Judea and Samaria."An Israeli source" briefed on last week's meeting with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was quoted in Haaretz on Tuesday as saying that Netanyahu wants to resume talks with the PA, with his goal being to reach understandings on the borders of "settlement blocs" that Israel would annex under any peace agreement."The prime minister explained that in this way, it would be clear what parts of the West Bank Israel could continue building in," the newspaper reported.PA chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told AFP the concept was "completely unacceptable," saying, "Netanyahu's proposal to discuss the borders of settlement blocs is an attempt to legitimize the settlements.""The borders that should be set are the borders of the internationally recognized state of Palestine based on 1967 borders. Settlements should be stopped instead of being legitimized," added Erekat.Despite his comments, far from being internationally recognized borders the "1967 borders" - actually the 1949 Armistice lines - are simply where the fighting stopped in the War of Independence, with international agreements at the time stipulating the line was not to be the basis for any future borders.Ironically Netanyahu has already stopped construction in Judea and Samaria as Erekat demanded occur, with all Jewish building in the region being frozen with almost no break since the last round of peace talks started in late 2013.Erekat was not alone in criticizing the report of Netanyahu's willingness to negotiate; senior Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Hanan Ashrawi said the plan attributed to Netanyahu was "a disingenuous and manipulative exercise in political and legal deception.""All settlements are illegal and in flagrant contravention of international law and consensus, and any efforts to annex and to legalize the settlements blocs is a blatant attempt to steal more Palestinian land," she said in a statement. In fact, the 2012 Levy report, which was commissioned by Netanyahu's government but is yet to be implemented, proved how Israel's presence in Judea and Samaria is entirely legal according to international law.

PM: Nuclear Iran 'A Thousand Times More Dangerous Than ISIS'-Netanyahu warns West against allowing itself to be distracted from Iranian threat by Islamic State; 'We must resist both ISIS and Iran.'By Ari Soffer-First Publish: 5/26/2015, 6:43 PM-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
As world powers reconvene talks with Iran ahead of next month's deadline for a deal over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would be "a thousand times more dangerous" than ISIS.In a meeting with visiting US Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) in Jerusalem Tuesday, Netanyahu once more emphasized Israel's position that the looming deal is a "very bad" one, and cautioned western states not to "rush" talks for the sake of reaching a deal at any costs."I see no reason to rush to a deal, and certainly not a bad deal that paves Iran’s path to the bomb, but also fills Iran’s coffers with tens of billions of dollars to pursue its aggression throughout the Middle East and around Israel’s borders," Netanyahu said."I think it’s important to apply pressure to get a better deal, one that avoids these two pitfalls, and I believe that this is necessary and urgent and possible for both our countries."Iran has stepped up its aggressive foreign policy, arming client states and proxies throughout the Middle East in what security experts have cited as proof that Tehran has been emboldened by western concessions in nuclear talks.Fears have been raised that the billions of dollars Iran would gain from promised sanctions relief - in exchange for minimal concessions on its nuclear program - would be funneled to terrorist groups and other militias fomenting instability in the region.Netanyahu also warned western audiences not to allow the threat posed by Shia Islamist Iran to be eclipsed by the rise of Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria and Iraq."I will say this: ISIS is in the news. Its murderous actions are horrific," noted Netanyahu. However, he added, "as horrific as ISIS is, once Iran, the preeminent terrorist state of our time, acquires nuclear weapons, it will be a hundred times more dangerous, a thousand times more dangerous and more destructive than ISIS.""I think we have to resist both ISIS and Iran," he insisted. "We shouldn’t give Iran a path to nuclear weapons and billions of dollars to pursue aggression because of ISIS. ISIS should be fought; Iran should be stopped.""We welcome the partnership, bipartisan, with the United States because we think that the relationship between Israel and the United States is a precious asset for both countries. Everyone in Israel thinks so as I do."Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-e-Ravanchi will meet European Union deputy foreign policy chief Helga Schmid - who will represent the P5+1 world powers - in Vienna on Wednesday, as the sides attempt to implement the framework deal reached in April ahead of a June 30 deadline.
WE ARE CHRISTIANS WE WILL BE TREATED THE SAME.PERSECUSSION
2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5 (WHY WE ARE PERSECUTED BY THE WORLD)
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous (DANGEROUS) times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
MATTHEW 5:10-12
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
MATTHEW 24:9
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
JOHN 15:18-20
18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me (JESUS) before it hated you.
19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
1 PETER 4:16-19
16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.
17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
REVELATION 6:9-11
9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain(BEHEADED) for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
REVELATION 20:4
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands;(WILLINGLY-THEY CHOSE THE IMPLANT) and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
GENESIS 16:11-12
11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her,(HAGAR) Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael;(FATHER OF THE ARAB/MUSLIMS) because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12 And he (ISHMAEL) will be a wild man;(ISLAM IS A FAKE AND DANGEROUS SEX FOR MURDER CULT) his hand will be against every man,(ISLAM HATES EVERYONE) and every man's hand against him;(PROTECTING THEMSELVES FROM BEING BEHEADED) and he (ISHMAEL ARAB/MUSLIM) shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.(LITERAL-THE ARABS LIVE WITH THEIR BRETHERN JEWS)

Op-Ed: A Genocide of Christians is Underway - and the West Sleeps-A new document attests to the genocide that is being ignored by the world.Published: Tuesday, May 26, 2015 8:29 AM-Giulio Meotti
Every year, more than 100,000 Christians are murdered just because of their faith. This means that 11 Christians are murdered every hour. The numbers are contained in a new document presented by John McAreavey, president of the Justice and Peace Commission of the Bishops of Dublin. A genocide of Christians is under way.In many Middle Eastern cities, from Aleppo to Mosul, the Islamists have dealt with each and every Christian by displacing, killing or forcibly converting them, and just like the Nazis painted the Star of David on the Jewish homes, the jihadists have painted the “N” letter on Christian houses to identify them before destroying them. The churches have been demolished, the crosses burned and replaced with flags of the Islamic State, entire communities have been displaced, children and women massacred. Everything has been done in plain sight. The Islamists proclaim that they will not stop until Christianity is wiped off the face of the earth. These Christians are killed just because they didn’t agree to convert. How many in the West would have done the same? In the video of the recent massacre of Coptic Christians in Libya, it has been noted that many of them, before being beheaded, invoked the name of Jesus in Arabic and chanted prayers.“Aleppo will be left without Christians within one month”, the Chaldean bishop of the Syrian city, Antoine Audo, has announced. He accused not only the Islamic State, but also “the countries of the region with their Wahhabi Islam and anxiety of historical revenge toward Christianity”.More than 5,000 Catholics have been killed since 2009 by Boko Haram in the diocese of Maiduguri in northern Nigeria. In total, more than 13,000 Christians were killed by these terrorists. 100,000 Catholics expelled from their homes, 350 churches destroyed, many more than once, after they had been rebuilt. But you don’t need to go to Mosul to see the crosses removed by bulldozers. Just take a train to Rennes, in France, because according to a court, the statue to Pope John Paul is “too ostentatious” in the square of Ploermel and must be removed.Or take a train to Luxembourg, the “happy country” where the MP Xavier Bettel has just become the first gay prime minister to marry his partner. In Belgium, religion will disappear completely from schools and will be replaced by courses in “ethics” and “secular values”. Behind the happy face of this small and rich nation of castles, picturesque forests and towers lies a kind of hypnotic nihilism. The problem is not the Islamic fanatics who burn the churches and kill the pastors. The problem is that the apathetic, indolent West is letting them to do so because it has ceased to believe in itself.
Op-Ed: Religious Illiteracy Hampers West’s Response to Radical Islam-We are faced with a multicultural elite that freely slanders and disparages Israel, Jews, Christians and western values, but which tends to excuse Islamist extremism or contextualize it disingenuously.Published: Monday, March 30, 2015 11:36 AM-Matthew M. Hausman, J.D.-ISRAELNATIONALNEWS
It seems that some lessons are difficult to learn. As ISIS was busy slaughtering Yazidis, Coptic Christians and western hostages, burning fellow Muslim alive, and destroying ancient pre-Islamic artifacts, President Obama was denying its spiritual pedigree and planning a White House summit on violent extremism that would deny any connection between radical Islam and terrorism. The very use of the term “violent extremism” minimized the terrorist threat by obscuring its ideological motivations. And by using neutral terminology to mask its doctrinal character and goals, the president didn’t simply ignore the religious connection – he affirmatively denied it and thus facilitated Islamist dissimulation. He also attempted to shift blame for terrorism by legitimizing Muslim grievances against the West and attributing the actions of religious extremists to economic privation. With other world leaders and moderate Muslims finally acknowledging the threat, President Obama’s steadfast refusal to do likewise seems pathological. His denial of the religious foundation for much of today’s terrorism – and for Iran’s nuclear ambitions – is a slap in the face of reality and an insult to Israel and all other U.S. allies that are targets of Islamist aggression. Moreover, it demonstrates either ignorance of history or an affinity for those committed to religious totalitarianism.Mr. Obama’s coddling of extremist organizations and rogue regimes stands in sharp contrast to his hostility for Binyamin Netanyahu and duplicitous treatment of Israel. Furthermore, any discussion that misrepresents Islamist terror as “violent extremism,” or fails to acknowledge that its primary targets are Jews, westerners, “infidels” and “heretics,” serves only to camouflage the problem. There can be no understanding of radical Islam without recognizing its historical antecedents and theological underpinnings, according to Rabbi Dr. Richard Rubenstein and Pastor Dr. Mark Durie, who spoke at a recent program in Massachusetts entitled, “Responses to Jihad from Christian and Jewish Theological Perspectives.” Dr. Rubenstein is an academic theologian with degrees from the University of Cincinnati, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Harvard University. A former university president, he is the Distinguished Research Professor of Religion in the College of Public and International Affairs at the University of Bridgeport and the author of numerous books on theology and history, including, “After Auschwitz” and “Jihad and Genocide.”Dr. Durie is a Christian theologian, human rights activist and Anglican pastor, as well as a Shillman-Ginsburg Writing Fellow at the Middle East Forum and Adjunct Research Fellow of the Centre for the Study of Islam and Other Faiths at Melbourne School of Theology. He has published an array books and articles, including, “The Third Choice: Islam, Dhimmitude and Freedom,” and numerous meditations on Christian-Muslim relations and religious freedom.According to Dr. Rubenstein and Dr. Durie, western society’s inadequate response to Islamic radicalism arises from religious illiteracy and ignorance of history. Gaps in popular knowledge exist because of the secular progressive penchant for belittling domestic religious traditions, criticizing western culture’s global influence, and suppressing history that contravenes liberal sensibilities. A common ploy for minimizing the threat of radical Islam is to compare it to Christian or Jewish religious traditions in order to present it as somehow less extreme by association.Such intellectual artifice does not withstand critical scrutiny, particularly in light of the post-reformation, post-enlightenment evolution of Christianity and the lack of an evangelical impulse in Judaism. Christianity differs greatly from Islam, and neither tradition is squarely comparable to Judaism, in which national identity and religious obligation are merged and the Covenant remains binding on successive generations through common history and descent.Though Christianity has a missionary tradition, and while its persecution of Jews was institutionalized by Constantine and later codified by Theodosius and Justinian, it did not begin to engage in holy wars until almost a thousand years after its birth. In contrast, followers of Islam have engaged in jihad, which is explicitly referenced in the Quran, from its earliest days to the present in many parts of the world. This is not to ignore the Christian mistreatment of Jews throughout the generations or the anti-Semitism that persists in many quarters today, but conditions ameliorated comparatively after reformation and enlightenment. Indeed, many Christians today are unwavering supporters of Israel. The Islamic world, however, has not experienced the same kind of reformative change. The ability to understand religious differences is essential for understanding the conflict between Islamist radicalism and western values. By way of illustration, Dr. Rubenstein recounted an interaction he had with a Muslim cleric who opined that Islam would ultimately predominate because “[we] love death, while you love life.” According to Dr. Rubenstein, this observation is indicative of a master-slave worldview in which those in control do not fear death, but rather prefer it over the loss of mastery and freedom, while the slave accepts his lowly status in order to preserve life. This Weltanschauung does not recognize universal human rights and accords “nonbelievers” only two choices: dhimmitude or death.Dr. Rubenstein likened this view to Hegel’s master and slave dialectic, and said it explains why subjugated peoples are willing to live in dhimmitude. Those who value life are more likely to accept subservience than those who are willing to kill or die to advance their ideology and preserve their mastery. The western mainstream’s knowledge of Islam is generally limited and is colored by its own cultural perspectives. Few actually read the Quran, Hadith and Sira, and fewer still seem to have any awareness of how non-Muslims were habitually treated in Islamic society. Observant Jews who bridge the knowledge gap are capable of seeing how Islamic tradition deviates from their own. So are believing Christians. However, secular people with little connection to religion do not have the same frame of reference, and thus often do not see where different faiths diverge.Secular westerners tend to eschew religious belief in favor of liberal political values and often fail to confront radical beliefs for which they have no theological sense of perspective. It is difficult to analyze religious extremism in the absence of a countervailing belief system against which to compare. When confronted with Islamist ideology, some progressives attempt to accommodate it in the name of multiculturalism, or to deem negative reactions to it as bigoted and insensitive. Such responses are certainly informed by religious illiteracy, but are also shaped by moral relativism and ignorance of history.Dr. Durie attributes the prevalence of religious illiteracy to the success of secularism and enlightenment. Though liberal democracy certainly affords rights and liberties that are unheard of in dictatorial theocracies, the trivialization of religion has made it difficult to discuss matters of faith cogently. Those who believe all religions are fundamentally the same often have little understanding of their own traditions and thus have no standard for determining how extremism deviates from normative faith. Some believe that all religions are benign and peaceful, while others believe they are all reactionary. But informed analysis becomes difficult when mainstream religious knowledge is reduced to generalized concepts of little substance.According to Dr. Durie, Christianity has the capacity for critical self-reflection; and, indeed, Christian views regarding Jews and non-Christians have evolved in ways that have no analogue in the Islamic world. In addition, Dr. Durie believes that Christian and Jewish religious identities are shaped by relational covenants with G-d rather than the master-slave dynamic. He does not believe there is a parallel perspective in Muslim scripture. The lay ability to discern such distinctions, however, decreases as society loses sight of its own religious traditions. In addition to being hampered by religious illiteracy, progressive society tends to view Islamism from a morally relativistic perspective and to ignore the historical role of holy war in spreading the faith. Though the left falsely accuses Israel of being a colonial creation – ignoring the native Jewish presence that long predated all other claimants and usurpers to the Jewish homeland – it has amnesia regarding the history of jihadist conquest and colonialism. The White House is of like mind in its refusal to acknowledge the Islamist basis for much of today’s terrorism – or for that matter to recognize Jewish ancestral rights in Israel. Despite terrorist acts committed throughout North America, including assaults, murders and the attack on the Canadian Parliament, and regardless of the increasing numbers of ISIS and al-Qaeda sympathizers arrested in the U.S., Mr. Obama refuses to concede any links to radical Islam. This refusal has become a meme of his administration, often leading to absurd results, such as designating the Fort Hood shooting as workplace violence and referring to terrorism perpetrated by Muslims as “man-caused disasters.” Those who refuse to make the connection must deny the long history of jihadist colonialism in the Mideast, India, Africa, Asia and Europe, where fanatical armies subjugated indigenous peoples, destroyed their sacred places, and exterminated those who refused to submit. In extolling the virtues of an idealized Muslim tolerance that never really existed, secular apologists from the president on down – liberals and conservatives alike – are simply parroting back dissimulation that is fed to them. How many in the secular mainstream have the background to understand that ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram are engaging in modern jihad and have no desire for peaceful coexistence? But how many in the secular mainstream have the background to understand that ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram are engaging in modern jihad and have no desire for peaceful coexistence? This is precisely the scenario envisioned by Samuel P. Huntington in “The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order,” which seems all the more prescient in light of current events.Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the West has been confronted with Islamist aggression. Jihad came to the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century and spread to the Balkans and other parts of Europe thereafter. As brutal as the Crusaders were to Jews, their campaigns against Muslims were reactions to the jihad that had been unleashed on Europe centuries earlier, and which was not finally quashed until the Battle of Vienna in 1683.The United States, too, had early experiences with doctrinal militancy, as alluded to in the Marine Corps Hymn, which begins with the verse: “From the Halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli.” These words refer to the First and Second Barbary Wars precipitated by Muslim pirates from North Africa, who began attacking and ransoming American and European ships in the late eighteenth century. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams met in London in 1785 with Sidi Haji Abdrahaman, the envoy from Tripoli, who explained to them:It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every Muslim who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once. (“Jefferson, American Minister in France,” p. 413, the Atlantic Monthly, Volume 30, Issue 180, October 1872.) The First Barbary War ended when the United States agreed to pay annual ransom to ensure safe passage. But the cessation of tribute in 1801 triggered the Second Barbary War, which ended with the U.S. Naval bombardment of Algiers. Unfortunately, American school children no longer learn this history, as progressive educators have jettisoned subject matter deemed culturally offensive or insensitive. This cultural dumbing down is an inevitable consequence of the theological illiteracy and politicization of education about which Dr. Rubenstein and Dr. Durie spoke, and which have compromised western society’s ability to understand religious extremism. The problem is exacerbated by a multicultural elite that freely slanders and disparages Israel, Jews, Christians and western values, but which tends to excuse Islamist extremism or contextualize it disingenuously.Whatever the reasons for this state of affairs, western society has not responded effectively because it refuses even to identify the problem. However, mislabeling Islamist terrorism “workplace violence” or “violent extremism,” or falsely comparing it to the lawful political activities of religious conservatives, only inhibits the ability to confront it. The situation will not change until westerners reclaim their own religious traditions, relearn their history, and take control of the dialogue from those who believe that religious terrorism is an understandable reaction to European and American chauvinism.
